Got my first taco, a first gen TRD double cab back in February. Living the truck has done everything I could ask if it. I'm hoping to eventually pull off a 4x4 conversion but that's on the back burner until I slowly source parts.

For now just wanted to go over some planned maintenance and upgrades and get some advice if that's a good starting point for my purposes.

I plan to eventually use my Tacoma to tow a small 2200 pound popup trailer. So for tow maintenance and upgrades I'm planning to do:

    1. Aftermarket transmission cooler ran inline, a long with a transmission filter and basic drain and fill. Service records show a drain and fill with filter was done about 30k miles ago and the fluid is dark cherry not brown or black so I feel pretty safe doing so.

    2. Green fan clutch upgrade.

    3. Brake controller, probably a proportional braking brake controller.

    4. Tow hitch I'm open to advice seeing as I have the bumper ball but the trailer is 1000 pounds short of the tow capacity of the bumper ball so I'm wondering if a full blown bitch would be worth it.

So far I've checked the lower ball joints, seem solid no visible play, and service records indicate done about 20k ago with moog. Tie rods do have play however when pulling jacked up tire at 3 and 9 o'clock positions.

Pinion bearing was going out so I got budget third member in for now while a transmission shop is installing a bearing kit into my old differential, shop said my gears looked good so I'm just going with bearings. Shop quoted 500 at most for the bearing kit and I don't plan on regearing so I'm ok with that.

Already installed a 4 pin trailer wiring kit along with a 7 pin plug. Any advice on wiring a break controller or a good place to wire into a key on power source so I can set up a relay for the brake controller and other accessories would be appreciated as well. Sitting at 280k miles and can't find any service records for the timing belt so also planning on doing a timing belt, tensioner and water pump soon as well.

Is there anything else I should keep an eye on?
