Bought my 2018 SR5 new, 35,000 miles, live in Steamboat Springs. Three times when the temps are in the low to mid 90's and the truck has been running for awhile, and not moving very fast the engine feels like it is misfiring or not getting fuel, sputters and doesn't go above 2000 rpm. Check engine light comes on, I pull over open the hood and let it cool off for 10 minutes then will run okay. Check engine light stays on, temp gage does not show that it is hot. I can drive it fine after it "cools", check engine light stays on for a day or so then goes off.

    Any suggestions?

    thanks

Connect an OBD2 scanner to read the codes yet?

Is it impossible to make the vehicle go over 2,000 RPM? Like if you shove the gas pedal to the floor downhill? It won't let you go any higher?

If its sputtering and misfiring, and then that tells me it's either not getting spark, or not getting fuel when it heats up. I'd start by checking your spark plugs, (May as well pull them and look for oil or something while you're there) after that I would run a continuity test on the cables, and move them around as I do to see if there could be a break in one of the cables.

That wouldn't explain why you can't get over 2000 RPM, but it would eliminate that variable from why you may be misfiring

First step is to check for codes.

Thanks, I'll buy a code reader tomorrow and maybe ask more advise afterwards. Around here we often have to make an appointment weeks out for a good mechanic.

It will not exceed 2000 when I push the accelerator to the floor. I thought it might be a vapor lock. I remember that being an issue with VW's back in the 80's but I thought the technology has outgrown such a basic problem.

Code reader is the first thing to do. Hope it provides answers. I have also believe it or not had an ecu that would fail until it cooled down, then it would work like nothing happened. Not saying it’s the problem but I have experienced it before. Again… code reader first

Bought a code reader and the stored codes were P0087 and P0191, both indicating fuel rail pressure issues. I noticed some years had a recall for this, but I never received a notice. Called the dealer I bought it from in Boulder and mine is in the recall. Boulder is over 3 hours away and the part takes a week to get.

One question that you guys might know can I take this to any dealer in the country? I would hope so, we are headed to the PNW next week so I could get it done there if I call ahead to get the part.

Thanks for the help, so handy to have the code reader.

Yeah, any Toyota dealer will do the recall.
