That damn thing bugs me too. I'm getting 22 MPG and thus a real range of 400 miles, but the miles to empty is way off.

great advise, I think I’m going fill it up every 100 miles that way I don’t have to think about running out of gas.

Last week I drove 35 miles after my DTE was zero and fuel gauge showed nothing. Little nerve racking but when I filled up, it took 16.5 gallons…y’all will get used to it

Interesting, my next test was to see what the gauge said one I reached the empty mark. If what you say is true, I am baffled by what the engineer’s are thinking. My only assumption is; let’s put a 18 gallon tank in this truck, but force the owner use 15 gallons and they will be happy. No mind games here move on…

This is my 1st Toyota truck since 1984. Is the new normal for them to have such a poorly engineered fuel gauge?

A first for me too. Every other vehicle I've ever owned showed the whole capacity of the fuel tank. If it said empty, you were within 0 to .5 gallon of empty. None had gauges where they hid 3 gallons like someone smuggling booze onto to a cruise ship.

I've done this :anonymous:, but I don't condone Toyota hiding my own gas from me

Our 2018 Honda Odyssey LOW FUEL indicator comes on when the fuel needle is at 1/4 tank. According to manual : 19.5gal tank / light comes on with 3.6gal in the tank / avg fuel economy 20 MPG. Always thought this was odd, evidently the GEN 4 operates similarly. Odyssey manual states "You should refuel when the reading approaches E. Running out of fuel can cause the engine to misfire, damaging the catalytic converter." Unlike the GEN 4, the Odyssey "miles until empty" is accurate and shows the distance of all 19.5gal in the tank (roughly 390mi per tank). Also unlike the GEN 4, the Odyssey MTE and fuel gauge updates very reliably even if I only add a couple of gallons to the tank - no Konami cheat code to refresh the fuel indicator.

For now this gas gauge system has peeved me! If the Toyota app can tell me my doors are unlocked then why can’t the fuel gauge tell me exactly how much fuel is in my tank? It hard to make sense out nonsense.

I trust the fuel gauge; what isn't working is the range. It's as if it is still using the MPG from the first tank at the factory.

I wonder if a reset on MPG or 100L/km would resolve that? I'll give it a try.

I filled up with 600 miles on the odometer. Hooked up my 3000# travel trailer and drove 120 miles to the campground. Fuel gauge showed about 5/8 of a tank. On the return trip, I look down after about 60 miles and I'm almost to empty. The miles to empty shows 20 and is going down more than 1 mile for every mile driven. The next gas station is 10 miles away. By the time I get there, miles to empty shows 4, gas gas is on "E" and the warning light is on. I put in 17.2 gallons.

Toyota has always been extremely conservative with their DTE and fuel on empty. It’s nothing new. My 2011 4Runner on E and with 0 miles to empty takes 20gal and it’s a 23gal tank. They leave a decent sized reserve. If I remember right, the new Tundra will take 26gal on E and DTE 0. It’s a 32gal tank.

I have a ScanGauge I'm not using. I'm just going to use that for a real DtE calculation. No more weird nanny mode and gas hoarding.

My 2016 was a lot more accurate that this. I cleared my MPG data today (I'm on my third tank) and will top off tomorrow and see if it wakes up.

I took mine down to zero (at which point the message switches to “Refuel”). The tank held 16.2 gallons.

Trade it in, medicate yourself, or shift the paradigm. In the cosmic perspective it’s already over for all of us. This does not matter one bit. That’s your free therapy for the day.

Actually, I found that the actual fuel gauge is accurate on my truck which is all I cared about. The "miles to empty" is just comic relief.
