the scratches are adding up after 13yrs and 100k miles on relatives '11 Taco

the part is not a horrific price and i am not sure how much involved it is to remove trim and dash parts to get at it for replacement or does it require specialty skills + tools?

how often have YOU decided enough scratches is enough and just put a fresh 'glass' for a 'new feel' behind the wheel

I want to replace mine since the micro scratches on it are annoying at certain light angles, but it's a lot of work. The part itself is cheap tho around $25.

Before you go through all that work, get some Novus Plastic Clean & Shine (#1,2,and 3) and try to polish out all the scratches. You can usually get that "like new" again look with some elbow grease.

This is not advisable. The plastic has an anti-glare coating on it that will start to dissolve with polish and it'll look super splotchy.

My 07 gauge plastic still looks new after 16 years... only gets touched with meguiar's non abrasive mirror glaze clear plastic polish on a micro fiber towel once or twice a year.

Once or twice a year? Do you just let the dust and dirt buildup on there during that interval?

yep... better off just leaving it until you can clean it properly. If it's really bad i blow it off with a can of dust off first. The main thing is don't be tempted to touch the plastic with a paper towel or shop rag.

I just read in this thread

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...eplacement-how-to.258285/page-2#post-29467167

About applying some ppf to a replacement lens that can just be wiped off scratch free and water spot free
I wonder if this could work :notsure:

i am curious if applying the PPF to a new screatch-free lens, that it might produce a glare from direct sunlight or maybe it would not

would anybody know anything about this :notsure:

screen protech is literally designed for this, comes in an installation kit, for around $20 or less, using a protective film that is self-healing

ppf is paint protection film (exterior)
