I'm guessing you will retire, but will also keep working for fun, just not in the career that you trained for.

I was done at 52. I could not imagine not doing something.

For sure, who knows what my life will look like in 7 years anyway. I definitely don't feel like we are suffering at our current spending/saving level, and we both dropped down to 30 hrs/wk once we had our daughter. It's been a great balance and feels much more sustainable than the 50 hr weeks when we were starting out. We do really enjoy travel, backpacking, and hunting, so I'm sure I can find enough to keep myself busy once I step away.

I'd love to give my wife the gift of early retirement, but not till the house is paid off could it really happen. That said she is in human services and loves her work so much, I don't think she'd ever truly retire.

    Yeah

Wife is a special education teacher, and she's loved it for the 12+years she's been doing it

Hell she got accepted to continue with her doctorate so yeah...think she'll be doing it for awhile

    She's happy I'm retired though

    What's your wife do exactly

For 38 years, group homes for special needs adults.
She left that job due to a merger between her agency and another becoming a hostile takeover by the other.

Jan 1st started doing in home therapy, but her last day is Friday. She'll be working at an autism center first of next month.

She's taking courses for her BCBA cert, and needs the supervision hours to be able to get tested etc. The place she started with first of the year keeps telling her it's happening and it hasn't, so she had to do something.

Dang, that's awesome she does that sort of work

Wife has her BCBA, so even though it's dealing with children and the sort, yeah your wife would understand some similar hardships (although elderly adds another challenge too, crazy)

    Best of luck to her!

I say my wife's got a bit to go still cause she's also my age

Reading this thread. Have been off this site for years on and off for a while. Love hearing everyones success working out. Ive been very lucky myself and at 37 and closing in on being able to retire in 5 years if I want but once it's in reach I can honestly say I have no interest. Moving to owning a business is the best decision I ever made and while stressful sometimes, the freedom and money is hilarious for a guy like me who spent their childhood in a small house of 6 and parent who worked multiple minimum wage jobs to keep us floating.
Im not sure what the hell I would do if I retired in my 40s. Most of your social life ends up being work related.

Whether you are retired or close to it, here is an interesting way to view retirement.

I'm 28 and haven't really thought about it. Just started saving not too long ago with my company matched ira but literally have never checked it after setting it up.

I felt the video had some good points but the guy is not exactly me either. My “take away” from the video is I no longer plan what I will do each week. I have a list of big and little things I might want to do (big or little things around the house, places I want to travel etc.).

Somedays I check my lists to see if I feel like doing or starting something on the list. Others days I feel like relaxing and doing nothing. I feel good about doing both.
