My 14 mm six point socket hasn’t failed me yet. A flat head screw driver makes easy work of a stuck gasket.

For what it's worth I have had a Fumoto F-103 N valve on my '04 since ~March of 2005. It was at the recommendation of a friend. I paid ~$25 for it, and It was a good investment. The "F-103 N" has a (IIRC) 3/8" barb on the end. I connect a hose to that and drain the oil. It keeps the skid plate clean and hassle free. The valve itself has some oxidation on it from years of exposure. But the spring action, detent, and the opening/closing are still the same. The lowest point of the value (the barb) is above the skid plate.

I change my oil every 3000 miles with the recommended 5W-30. 290,000 miles on the 2000 Tacoma so far. I don't over-tighten the plug or the filter. And so far no problems!

I feel like on 1st gens, you're glossing over how much of a mess the last step makes in both routines.

Yep, it took me 15+ years to figure this one out in order to avoid a mess. I now place a plastic cup over the filter once I cracked it loose.
