These are skid plate bolts. Part number 90119–A0549. I am trying to understand why the threads on these would be intentionally marred. These were purchased brand new from the dealer.

It looks deliberately messed up but I can't figure out why.

    Any rationale?

The only theory I can come up with is that this happens when the captive washer is press fit over the threads. It just seems sloppy. But maybe precision is not necessary in this application.

    those are thread cutting bolts.

you can also see that the first two threads have a taper, to allow them to fit into a narrower hole than the rest of the threads.

Interesting. Thank you. I found this description on Grainger's website:

Thread Cutting Screw: 3/8" Size, 3/4 in Lg, Steel, Zinc Plated, Hex Washer, Slotted, 100 PK - Grainger

Thread-cutting screws are self-tapping screws that fill and secure existing holes in metal. They are easily removable and are often used as fasteners in items that need periodic maintenance.

Which makes sense as a skid plate would be removed for maintenance or cleanout.
