My truck a 2013 4.0 has started to go into limp mode recently so I retrieved a single code of P0011. Checked my oil which I changed two weeks prior and it was good. I try to change it every 10,000 kms, not sure of previous owner. Truck now has 275,000 kms. When I checked the oil contol valve (vvt) screen on passenger side it was clean no debris so I pulled the oil control valve which snapped into two pieces really easily by my hand. I ordered another OEM one from the US because it was alot cheaper than here in Canada but it had a 3 week delivery so I bought a chinese one from Amazon as a fix until the OEM one came because it had a 2 day delivery. Put the Amazon one in for the time being, reset the code and took it for a 3-4 km drive with no problem but of course the code was still stored in the permanent memory. Today I took it out and it went back into limp mode with the P0011 code but this time it was accompanied with P0016 so I next checked the timing chain tensioner through the inspection door on the right side and it looks fine ( image included at bottom of post) . My question is would a faulty oil control valve set these two codes. My OEM oil control valve will be here in two weeks I am hoping it will cure the truck what do you all think.

you should change your oil every 5000, not 10,000. also, there are small screens that are the filters for those OCV (Variable Valve Timing Solenoids is the term for Toyota). You didn't mention which engine you have, on the 4.0L V6 they are each side, under the heads, in the block. Passenger side is relatively easy to get at and check/clean/replace, the drivers side needs to have the alternator removed (some say slid out of the way, I've not had luck with that) to access that side. there are threads about this, do some searching. I don't know how the 4cyl is laid out.

    good luck

I change the oil every 10,000 kms or 6200 miles. The vvt screen on the passenger side had no debris I didn't check the left side because P0011 according to my scan tool is the right side. Sorry my engine is the 4.0, I should have stated that.

The oil control valves don't often cause P0016/P0018 codes but they can, being it's a china part of questionable quality it's certainly possible. The P0011 code is for over-advanced timing and cams rarely jump time to the advanced side so I'm thinking probably the solenoid.

I hope the new OEM oil control valve rectifies my problem or I'm going to the dealer. You ae right I understand you usually don't see timing chains jump ahead.Thank you.

Update, new vvt selonoid, spool valve, oil Con trol valve whatever your preferred name is replaced today and truck so far is back to normal, even the slight transmission shudder has gone away.
