Virginia..... NO! Communist, I mean Commonwealth state.

    Move to North Carolina.
    Reasons why.
    1. Both the beaches and mountains.
    2. True 4 season weather. North of NC, cold Winters. South, hot summers. We're just right except for the humidity.
    3. Super friendly Southern people.
    4. Super good Southern food.
    5. Forbes voted NC the best state for business a year or 2 back.
    6. Reasonable cost of living. Gas tax could be better though.
Too many other reasons to mention.

I moved into my new house last year. Moved about a 100 miles from the center part of the state.
There are 7 houses in our little neighborhood.
My wife and I are the only one ones that work.
All the others moved here as they retired.
One couple from Ohio, one from Michigan, one from Wyoming and one from South Carolina.
My next door neighbor lives in Florida. His house is his Summer home, I only see him 6 months out of the year.

Your options are entirely dependent on your employment needs. If you work remotely and don't need to be near a major hub airport, that opens up a ton of interesting options. Also, we would need some info on your interests. If you love hunting and fishing, for example, you should be looking at North Dakota or MN.

Friends moved south of Nashville ten years ago (between Franklin and Murfreesboro), from Long Island. In that quick period of time, they've told me, "Everything we moved away from followed us..." and they're getting ready to pick up and move again once their youngest finishes up high school.

    Do not move to NC!!

I'm a native, lived here most of my life.
Transplants have already ruined huge portions of this state.

Everyone used to be polite, have proper southern manners, yes sir, no ma'am, hold the door - now a solid 1/3 are jerks and worse in the city.

Yea, there are some "a holes" that have moved here. But most are friendly, and looking for a good simple "less regulated" life.
Like I said in my original post. Most of my neighbors are transplants. But if I didn't know it, I couldn't tell them from the natives.

    Some?
That was once true but not any more.

The recent transplants that move into my rural hood are really different than the natives or the older transplants [from a decade ago]
They don't wave, they don't say good morning when out walking, they act hostile towards large dogs [even though the large dogs are better behaved than their small ones] and don't hold the door open for others at the 'corner store' aka the only gas station/bodega in a 10 mile radius...
Then they turn around complain that we are not friendly..
I live in a hood of maybe 50-60 homes, there is no reason to be so rude/standoffish - this is not a large community at all - we all recognize each other..

The natives can 100% tell the difference
There are a handful of good ones but most have just ruined the civility of living around here...

We are pretty much FL natives. Lived here for over 40 of my 61 years. We have two properties in Florida. One we live in full time in St. Pete area (727) and the other in North Florida (386) where we can get away from the stifling political leanings and traffic and all the people fleeing California, Oregon, Washington State...and of course New York, NJ, Michigan...Illinois...you get the picture. They cant wait to get here and make it the crap hole they moved away from...

We looked at NC (Ashville and that metro area). WAY too expensive and very restrictive. 1/4 acre lot, nearly vertical was $100K. Not a fan of the politics or taxes...also looked at TN, around Pigeon Forge and that area...priced out.

We enjoy the current Florida tax structure, conservative values in a lot of places outside the metro areas, and the abundance of affordable land away from the coasts. Price was great and we picked up 20 acres with well and septic, no HOA at the end of a dirt road, and 15 miles to the nearest traffic light.

That being said...it does get "EXTREMELY SWELTERING-HATE THE SUN-HOW DID THE INDIANS EVER SURVIVE HERE-HOT" here for about 4 months, then it tames down to "pretty hot" for a couple months on either side of those extreme "pretty hot months". Then damn near perfect for 2 months on either side of that.
Seriously though...if you don't like conservative values and freedom...don't come here. Life is too short to be miserable where you live.

Texas, Colorado, and Virginia are great choices for a change of pace. In South Virginia, I found the cost of living reasonable and the job market decent, especially for IT roles. We moved pretty spontaneously. My wife received a call from work, we packed our stuff, called arrow xl, and moved out. It took only a week, but we were exhausted.
