This trailer is designed so you can lower the tailgate & not hit the jack.

The tailgate is designed to warm up a pizza pretzel I got yesterday at The Club.

First fill up hauling the car - 12.3 mpg

On the positive I'll get a bunch of rewards on the card I use for gas...

I've never seen stabilizers used on anything other than a camper. Is that your idea for added safety, Rusty?

I don't think those are stabilizers.

That's a load equalization hitch. Just transfers some load to the front axle.

The runways are 18 feet, the total length is 24 feet.
Trailer weight is 1551 pounds with a 7000 pound GVW.
Electric brakes on all 4 wheels.

    This car has no engine/transmission so it weighs about 3000 + 1550 = 4500.
It isn't quick accelerating but OK. Towing a car is much better than towing an equal weight travel coach.

The weight distribution hitch is a real asset when towing heavier trailers.

When you hit the right conditions on the road the trailer and truck can get oscillating kind of like two seesaws held together with a hinge :bikewhoops::bikewhoops: and really hit the axle bump stops hard - especially on a not very heavy suspension like the Tacoma.

The weight distribution dampens that hinge (the hitch) from swinging down so the bumps are more of a one and done thing, it makes the combination feel better planted on the road.
I wouldn't be without it on this trip.

Have a link to the weight distribution hitch or a make/model? I might be needing one soon.

    Look here: https://www.reeseprod.com/Products/weight-distribution

Mine is a massive Reese #66542 12,000 rated Trunnion unit, way over what the Tacoma needs.
I used it on my F-250.
It could also accept a friction style anti-sway control.
It probably weighs 40 pounds. :ballchain:

The newer ones use cams for an "active" sway control.

Appreciate it! I've been looking at the Winnebago Micro Minnie and Winnebago Hike 100 travel trailers. Trying to see what I can safely get away with without upgrading to a bigger tow vehicle.

Back in Indiana for the night, the trip through the Indianapolis area was first gear idling along in heavy traffic for a long time...

I have tinkered with the car position and also added 2 psi to the rear tires on the truck, it feels nicely dialed in now. Running in fourth gear at 70 mph is about 3300-3400 rpm and fuel economy o_O is in the 12 range.

The engine is well into the power band at that rpm so it will smoothly climb most of the rolling hills I have encountered without loosing speed. Oddly, after I have pulled off the road the engine idling is almost dead silent.

    Observation:
Kia and Hyundai drivers seem to be the most likely to have poor situational awareness - doing things like camping out next to you in the left lane when someone is merging on the right from an on ramp.
    Rusty >>

    Or...

Coming up the on ramp (with a prominent "Yield" sigh) and just rocking right on the highway no matter if you can move over or not.
Also Rusty >> - - :rocket: -
