I had a tune on my 2019 until yesterday when I sold it. It really did help with the engine-tranny relationship, shift point always felt better. Never had any issues with it. Just make sure you get the tune from a reliable source.

Believe I got the KDMax 9 tune ~2 years ago.

I would never go back and have had other Tacoma owners drive mine to compare and its night and day.
Its the only way to make it not feel like a jacked up corolla.

I got the OTT about 8 months ago (V6 auto) and put about 7500 miles on it since. Was it the huge change a lot of folks say it is? No. Did it improve the truck enough to warrant the cost? IMO, yes. I recently added the AES intake spacer and it seems it works nicely with the tune.

There's a "medium/spicy" as well IIRC. Keep in mind those are only different pedal sensitivities, they do not change power.

I had a KDMaxx on my 2016 Access cab with E range tires and FWC in the back. MPG’s went up (I got around 16-18 from 12-15) and it was absolutely amazing to drive. Got the tune at around 60k miles and had no issues until 120k when a drunk driver totaled it.

I had a OTT in my 2017 DCLB with E range tires and a GFC in the back. Unsure about MPG’s as I bought the truck used and immediately got it tuned. Was amazing to drive in everything except stop and go. Way too jumpy off the line. I just couldn’t get used to it. If you don’t do a lot of stop and go then it would absolutely recommend. I believe with the tires and camper it was medium level tune.

Currently have a 2023 with an Oru Bruin and SL tires. Currently on stock tune (since I am afraid to void warranty). Drives good enough even though I would absolutely love it tuned for the mountains/highways. Once I have time to put on the skinny 33’s and a 1.5” level i have sitting in my garage it will get tuned regardless of my warranty status. I will go with OTT mild this next go around and communicate with my tuner that I would like the lower end as close to stock as possible (I.e.less jumpy off the line). Currently sitting at 18mpg’s, I anticipate about a 1 mpg loss based on previously tire and tune configurations

If the throttle is too sensitive with the OTT they will change the throttle response to a lighter setting including back to stock. I went mild/medium and I don't know if it's in my head or not but the throttle seems more responsive since the intake spacer. I guess shifting the torque curve could do that.

Well actually in this case the tuner actually is listening to the customer regarding how the you (the customer) use and drive your truck and how you want the truck tuned. I mean I guess you could just say you don't want your truck to gear hunt and you know kind of be more responsive and the tuner could then try and read your mind and go from there. OR . . . . they could ask you a series of questions to understand how you actually use your truck and what you actually want from the tune. So yeah I'll go with in the case of the OTT questionnaire they are actually listening to the customer - just my opinion though. And I guess maybe surveys after you buy something or used a web site can be as you describe . . . I never bother with those so I can't really say.

OTT torque Tune, Undercover truck bed cover. Brake controller.
As stated in a different thread: I'm getting the ott next Saturday. I'm leaning toward Medium. But I am struggling to understand what"throttle response"will be like. I understand what the words mean. But I don't understand how the throttle will be more or less responsive. It is already responsive in the stock condition IMHO....

2 components to the tune. The “tune” ECU/TCU is the same no matter what throttle response you choose. But for the throttle response for the 3G Tacoma they have the following (from close to stock to most aggressive): Lite Minus, Lite, Mild, Medium, Spicy, and Super Spicy.

I first got the OTT tune a few years ago (2019 OR). It was set up for small lift and 33's.
It was better yes, but not mind-blowing like some were saying. The shift points were better but it still hunted for gears.

I got it re-geared and had to get another tune to get rid of the "rev limiter", basically meaning it wouldn't top out at like 70 something mph.

I also went with the medium/mild instead of the next level.

The pedal response I would explain like this. With the "spicier" levels, when you touch the gas the truck takes off. It felt real jerky to me. Maybe I just was not good at feathering the gas pedal. There were times that I could depress the gas pedal and not have it jump, but I just couldn't get it smooth. Maybe I'm just old and don't want to smash the gas from a dead stop all the time :)

So I went back to the guy and had him take it down the lower level of pedal response and it feels good. I'm one level above "stock", but the main reason I had to get it tuned again was to get rid of the limiter after the re-gear.

TLDR version: Pre regear...Made a modest difference. Worth the money? A hesitant yes from me.

Got OV Tune then OTT. Both changed EVERYTHING... for about a week. The difference was so significant that it felt like a new truck, but after a week or two of driving around, I found a lot of the more subtle idiosyncrasies were still present. In the end, I gave up on the 3rd gen Taco. I think it's a great truck; it just isn't for me.

MT for what it's worth. If I weren't such a MT snob, maybe I'd have a different story to tell.
