My SR currently is running on 265/70/17 which came off a 4Runner. They are 1.14” taller and .78” wider than the factory 16’s. The 17 looks good but they are not fuel efficient and that’s about it.

A new set of 245/60/20 from a 4Runner Limited is coming my way. The 20’s overall height is .04” lower than the 17’s. The width is the same as the SR’s original 245/75/16. The 20’s will have no clearing issues. Most of the 4Runners are issued with the 17’s. Only the Limited are issued with the 20’s.

There are many threads on wider tires such as the 285 on the 17’s and 16’s. I cannot find any threads on the 20’s on this forum. Can anybody shed some light on why no 20’s are being put on Tacoma? The curb weight of a 4Runner is about 500lb heavier than a Tacoma. So I assume it is safe to put the 20’s on a Tacoma. Is my assumption correct? Further, would the 20" retard the fuel efficiency as well from the 16's? TIA

Remember to compensate for the increased diameter in your MPG calcs. There would be about 5% more, which is about 1mpg.

The 20in 4Runner wheels and tires will fit, but 20in wheels are heavier and may affect your MPGs more.

On 20s in general, the 18s from the Limited look a bit weird on a Taco. 20in 4Runner wheels may look completely out of place on the Taco.

IMG_5865.jpg I run 275/55/20’s on 4Runner rims. Stock height no rubbing. And people ask me about “my lift” all the time. Also, it changed my odometer to showing 3% fast on my stock rims to 1% slow now so hardly noticeable.

on a truck you want more tire sidewall. with a 20 inch wheel you will be sacrificing inches of sidewall. watch some offroad recovery videos and youll notice the nimrods with 20 inch wheels and very thin sidewalls on the tires get flats offroading almost always. if its just for show i dont see why not but potholes will not be your friend.

is your focus to increase MPG's?
If so, I don't think upsizing the wheel is going to help. A lighter tire will, but not a larger wheel.

Negligible effect on gas mileage. I ran the same wheels/tires on my 2005 for almost 10 years and no noted change either. I’m sure if you ran back to back long term tests driving the same course you would see a small difference.

Personally I like more sidewall, especially on a truck. (not talking street truck or slammed truck here)

Not just for looks, but for ride quality.

If ride quality matters, the wheel/tire component of ride will likely be harsher than it is today.

The 4Runners Limited suspension is setup to handle 20's, whereas the Tacoma isn't. It "might" be a much rougher ride.
