Ran over a fat nail with a new tire, about 10k mi. Two shops say it's not repairable

Hello everyone. I'm on my first Taco, and ran over a fat roofing nail, went right through the outer tread (not a groove), tire went completely flat. It's the original Toyo. Been running on the spare for a few weeks now due to my work schedule :ballchain:

I've taken the flat to two shops, a Town Fair Tire, and a local guy with a good reputation.. Both say it is not repairable. I'm thinking I should just buy a new one, but how much of a problem would it be paired with the original? Also the TPMs issues are new to me... please help!

    Thank you

Edit: to be clear, it's not a sidewall puncture, it's the ground contact part of the tread.

Update: Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Couldn't post a pic because the tire was still in the shop. I'll try plugging it, and if that doesn't hold, go for a new one.

I'm still learning how to post & reply effectively, hopefully this is seen by all.

Liability is their concerns, especially if the puncture is close to the sidewall.

    Buy a new one

Shops will not repair punctures on the sidewall.

Depending how much tread is left on the other tires, but if they are all fairly new, you can probably just get one. Make sure to measure tread depth to see how much of a difference it would be.

Is the spare a matching tire to the ones on the ground?

If it is but on a different wheel, have that tire moved to the wheel on the ground.

If the damaged tire is pluggable (see posts below) have it mounted on the spare wheel. Plug it yourself at home and inflate to use as a spare.

I support plugging. I've run with as many as 3 at a time, 2 in one tire, on the interstate and actually competed in autox a couple times. Never had a failure of a plug. In fact I sold those tires, even advertised them as plugged, buyer didn't care.

How close to the edge? If you are really opposed to buying a new tire, you might buy a plug kit from Amazon and give it a go yourself.

1/4" is the max size for a repair on a P rated tire, so unless you drove on it for a while, (wallowing out the puncture or damaging the inner liner of the tire), or it not in the flat area of tread, it should be repairable.

Otherwise, a new pair of tires is needed. TPMS should be unaffected by a flat, unless it somehow got damaged while flat, or is damaged by the tech changing the tire, you shouldn't need a new sensor.

If you have anyone local with a tpms tool, you can either clone your sensor or program a new sensor into your truck and it won't be expensive.

If you have mag tires, check the lugs on the spare for tightness. This picture shows the difference between lugs needed for steelie/spare and mags ... the "cone" is critical for extended use of the spare. Top is for steelie, bottom for mag.

Put a plug in it, and don't worry about it.

Most likely, it will last the life of the tire. Every tire I've plugged has held air until I wore it out. A hole in the corner or on the sidewall (as you said yours it not) will not hold a plug as well due to the way the tire flexes.

    Life happens sometimes.

Given the age you might get away with buying one tire, you might have to buy two. But if it isnt reparable, it isnt repairable.

I bought my car used, but the tires were all good. First week into ownership, I snakebit one on a pothole. And there went a 4 tire purchase.

I just plugged my original Goodyears this week with the rope style. I've used them on cars, trucks and motorcycles with great success. OP take a picture of where your puncture is so we can get an idea of what's going on and if it's safely repairable.

Although my local Discount Tire offers free repairs I stopped using them after they scratched 2 wheels and lost a center cap.

I’ve plugged tires many times with whatever kit that’s available. As long as it’s not in the sidewall, it should be fine. I ran into a streak of bad luck with my ‘18 Civic. 3 of the tires were plugged, and one tire was plugged 2X. Some of them had 20k on the repair. I also carry a plug kit with me all the time.

If you have one where you are, take it to Les Schwab. And if they do want to repair it, it will be free. They do a patch with a plug for their repairs together, which makes a much better job of it.

I got 5 flats in one very bad month earlier this year. If nothing else, check eBay - I found used tires at a great price for two of those flats that couldn't be patched (turned "FML!" in to "fml, lol"). Seller "unitedtires" had both of them, as luck would have it, but I am sure there are others.
