I’m just using a

$18 Baofeng UV-5R VHF/UHF Dual Band Radio 144-148MHz 420-450MHz Transceiver

Baofeng UV-5R at the moment. It’s my first HAM radio and my first radio used for communication. I was just looking for something entry-level to extend my range by a reasonable amount

That’s a 2meter/70cm dual band radio, so you will need a 2meter/70cm (aka 2M/440mhz) dual band antenna to use it properly like this:

Would also be very helpful to get (or already have) a FCC Technician’s License so you will be able to legally use your radio and also so you can use many of the free repeaters all over the nation that will extend your range over hundreds of miles. If you don’t already have the license start here for information- it’s really not hard to get, And you don’t even have to know Morse code. Having one will help you communicate with others (licensed users tend to shut out those without) and to be allowed to use the relay stations: https://www.arrl.org/getting-your-technician-license

That second picture ... few who have not been in a place with absolutely cloudless skies that contact with rock/mountain edges can see that even the iPhone 14 Pro does not quite do it justice. You tried, the phone tried ... but the blue/red-brown edge must have been mind-blowing in person.
