Finally test drove a TRDOR IMAX today and loved it. The sales guy started selling, and I said I'd be ordering one soon that's built with my choices, just like my '18. He said Toyota doesn't do that anymore and I'd have to buy as is.
WTF? Does anyone know if this is true? My truck was delivered the way I wanted, with no crappy side steps, floor mats, or cheap ass bed cover. I sure don't want to pay for any of that, or some of the other do-dads they might include, especially the hideous oversized LED screen included with the leather interior.

No orders, you or the dealer can search inventory for what you want and they might be able to get it for you.

I'm also not fully up to date on what comes with each package, can you get leather without the multimedia upgrade?

You didn’t order your last one either. The dealership found an allocation that was scheduled for build to the same specs you wanted and didn’t have any port added options like steps, mats, etc put in it.

I learned the same thing and ended up searching for about a month and then waiting a month for an allocation that got me the big screen, which for me was necessary, but without the Premium package which people kept trying to tell me was the only way to get it (not true) and which I didn't want/refused to pay for. Other things I didn't want to pay for included the moonroof, but that was where I had to give in. There were no large displays to be had without a moonroof. They just aren't turning them out that way. I have the fabric seats, which are fine by me, and a leather steering wheel, which is honestly kinda nice. I was also not used to this process. Even so, I'm happy with what I ended up with, mine is a TRD OR iforce as well, and I'm loving driving it, it's super fun, lots of pep to that engine.

Same story here. I drove over 600 miles one way to buy my TRD Sport MT with no premium tech and large screen. I feel like I got lucky and found one that just happened to be available. But the moral of the story here is to be patient.

The search tool on toyota dot com is a hint that what you want might be available.

    Good luck with your search.
I worked with an out-of-state dealer to get the Tacoma I was looking for...it took months.

    Cheers

Keep in mind there’s a difference between factory options, port-installed options, and dealer installed options. So the reality is that there is some level of customization available but only for the doodads that could be added after the truck leaves the factory. Examples: wheels, mats, steps, alarm system, stuff like that.

In another similar thread a member was saying he was able to request a paint color change mid production, I’m not sure if that’s true or a different truck was allocated to the dealer, but I’ve been told that sort of thing is fairly rare.

You can eventually get pretty close to what you’re looking for, but you’ll need to work. You also might need to drive or travel, and you’ll definitely want to engage with more than one dealer. Don’t feel compelled to drop a deposit, b/c it’s no longer 2022.

And if, as you indicated, you don’t like wasting $1000’s on crappy side steps, worthless charge cables, and other various overpriced pieces of flair, then steer well clear of any trucks that pass through SE Toyota before arriving at the dealership. You’ll never spend more to get less.

There’s a winner somewhere out there for you right now, and it’s probably got a big discount on the hood. Good luck.

Honestly the best approach if you have the time, especially if you live in a region with a shitty distributor (looking at you, SE Toyota).

Every new 4Runner worth buying down here has $4-5000 of predator steps, pro wheels, and blacked out badges added on.

You're telling me a USB-A to USB-C cable costs less than $200? But it's red.

Then I don’t need that shit. But if it says TRD I’ll pay anything

True to a degree but the dealer can send a request in to the factory to change the build. The request has to be in the very early stages way before production begins.

I’ve heard these are mostly denied, and that dealers are reluctant to submit them because it’s extra work.

Toyota’s whole production efficiency strategy revolves around planning what’s being manufactured in advance by limiting the number of total configurations and determining how many of each will be made and where they’ll go. If they deviate from that too much they lose the efficiency gains.
