Driving at 70mph this morning, hear a loud thud and see half of my tonneau cover blow away. When I pull over, I see the locking mechanisms are still attached to the posts in the bed but ripped off the cover itself. Thank god no one was behind me. This is the cover that came on the truck not an after-market one. I just flipped 50k miles, but this definitely a strange thing. Would it do any good to check with my local Toyota dealer about replacing it?

Wow, that's crazy. Can you post pics? You said the latches were all still attached to the truck. What about the corner that bolts to the truck?

    Sorry for the huge pic....

The other latched were fine, but the cover ripped at the first folding part. The bolt is also gone. Don't know if it was loose or stolen or what but it's elsewhere.

Was the bolt in place? Was it closed all the way?

Can't imagine a properly closed cover would rip away like that. That's nuts.

That's kind of what I was wondering, if maybe someone removed/stole the bolt and then that corner was able to catch wind. Hopefully warranty will cover it. If not, maybe insurance?

You're welcome but it looks like your mileage already took you out of warranty :(

You would think it would have flapped some before simply flying away. I've heard nothing and I drive 100 miles a day on the interstate.

I'm sure you guys have long forgotten about this but I can say the same thing just happened to my 2020 TRD sport. It was folded and secured by the bolt and latch. The wind got under it, and it launched 20 ft into the air. I am lucky no one was around me at the time. The bolt is still attached with some of the plastic from the cover. It was ripped away from the truck upwards.

I've driven through some wicked windy days with cross winds, and have heard the wind whine through the cover at times when doing 75 mph, but it never showed signs of coming loose. Gotta be some freak cause. I wonder if some component got fatigued, and eventually failed.

I'm guessing that conditions converged to create a huge negative pressure behind the cab that then sucked the cover upwards. I've seen reports of this also happening with moon roofs. Certainly not common though. Hard covers would be more prone to this. Shouldn't be hard to engineer some sort of pressure relief, though you would think that there is enough leakage into the bed from below to handle this.

If anyone is worried about their cover, here's the redundant safety straps on my Gator SFX soft tri fold. The big chunky bracket on the left is the primary attachment up near the cab. It slides into the factory bed rails.

but there's an independent bracket next to it on the right. You can see the strap that attaches up to the frame of the cover, providing a secondary leash/backup in case the primary bracket fails. Hopefully that's a useful visual for anyone planning to add a redundant/safety strap to their cover

I've had 3 Tacomas that I had soft cover on and never seen or had any issues with them over the years. Mine where all Xtang Trifecta soft covers and their life warranty is great. So if you think it is a defect find the manufacturer and see what their warranties are.
