EDIT: going to send it and head home, deal with it there.

I seem to have torn my CV boot yesterday in Capitol Reef. I’m limping back to Green River / Junction this morning.

If someone could help reduce the downtime, I’d really appreciate it.

I need to source a replacement 2015 TRD OffRoad 4x4 CV passenger side, or just a way to close it up on the drive home.

Also, I don’t have the 36mm socket with me to remove the CV from the spindle/wheel bearing, so I guess I need some help or a recommended shop that could sneak me in ASAP since I need to get home tonight and back to work tomorrow.

@NYCO @RtacomaN Who else is out here that could lend a hand swapping a CV? @Wulf

I’ll be driving the next ~2 hours without service. I’ll check in near Green River when I stop for gas and then again when I arrive to junction.

For what it's worth, I've unknowingly driven hundreds of miles home on a torn boot and re-booted the CV later. It even took a bath in muddy water. Has many tens of thousands of miles on it since.

That’s good to keep in the back of the mind for small tear. My tear is very large and irregular and everything has been completely covered in grease. I wouldn’t be able to get the tire patch to stick right now.

I wouldn't sweat it. Pretty sure theres guys who have gone thousands of miles on torn boots. Especially if you're just tooling around in 2Hi

I've been driving on torn boots for about three years(~38000 miles) with heavy weekend offroading.... I realize it's anecdotal but OP is going to be fine.

wish I was close enough to lend a hand but I'm on the front range

Metric off-road in grand junction might be able to get you sorted if you're sweating getting it done for the drive back.

add me to the torn cv boot list. it will probably be fine for the short term since you're not busting snow drifts or playing in mud

I drove from colorado to socal on torn boots no problems. Got so tired of replacing the boots i drove a year on torn boots, plenty of offroading and dust and debris. Then after a year I replaced the CV axles with the CVJ Remanufactured ones. Not saying its a cheaper alternative to replacing a boot once but I was able to go probably close to 15,000 miles on torn boots. Threw some grease into the axle join a few times to make sure they werent running dry

That sucks my cv boot has a rip right now
I used a gallon baggie and zipties to keep it from slinging grease all over , until i get the cv replaced.
    I think you'll be fine

Hm, it didn’t fix itself while I drove a few hundred miles. I’ll try another leg.

I drove for at least a year (several thousand miles), through mud, water, etcetera on a torn boot...

honestly, it is not an emergency. just spray some grease in it and fix it when you get home.

there is not any jerry rigging of material over it that will hold up at all.
seran wrap, zip ties, electrical tape, wrap it in whatever the fk you think will work, and that shit will just flex and fling off, making more of a mess. the two piece boots also dont last for shit.

just fix it right whenever your trip is over.

I found a torn boot at 26,000 miles.

Said the hell with it and decided to run to failure. Sold the truck at 300,000 miles. I never changed it.
