Looking to join the ranks for the first time. Evaluating an otherwise nice, low mileage TRD OffRoad that started life in Maine but has rust issues. My intended use is a Texas hunting rig, solid on the interstate, capable & dependable on rough trails from Mexico to Kansas.

Love to benefit for your experience - Should I consider this a solid enough truck, or keep looking? Thank you in advance!

You'll get different opinions. That's a lot of rust for a 2 year truck imo. I'd keep looking.

Fluid Film or other undercoatings really help to prevent and minimize the rust.

If its not cheaper than a similar vehicle that has lived here it's whole life then it's not worth it in my opinion. It's not a ton of rust but finding a rust free truck here is too easy to bother

Lots of rust for the year due to absolutely no care in a road salted area.

Looks way better than mine that came out of West Va. If you are getting a screaming deal I'd go for it. If it's more than low book probably keep looking

I’d wash the underside more, hard to tell if some of that is dirt or rust in some areas. I’m leaning towards pass currently and keep looking.

Unless it's priced lower than other 2022 ORs in your area with similar mileage, I'd look elsewhere.

My 2018 that spends its winters in Canadian salt has less rust underneath...

That's not horrible from others I've seen on TW.

We are talking two winters tops.

What are they asking for it?

It does seem more than normal for a two year vehicle in the northeast, how many miles? I'd be concerned it was a possible coastal flood victim, so unless it is a screamin deal I'd keep looking.

Just find a car in AZ or TX or somewhere where there is no road salt, drive the car back, treat it with Fluid Film or whatever works, and have a car that is rust free with no worries for many years to come.

While that rust is mostly surface rust (or so it seems) and probably not structural, it is just a matter of time before it gets there. Rust is like cancer. And that does seem like a lot for a 22.

If you are looking to buy a 22 OR, that is a decent chunk of money, I would just look for one that isn't from an area that mistreats their roads and vehicles, there are plenty more out there.

Not everyone loves their trucks like we do, but that being said, that truck looks like it wasn’t owned but a Tacoma lover so it makes me wonder what else was neglected. I’d keep looking.

    Yeah.
Yeah, that looks significantly worse than my 2018 (that has been washed occasionally but never been treated), and it appears there's a lot more bubbling up from underneath the paint.

IF it's a GREAT price for the mileage and you will be keeping it in southern areas like you say, it might be worth it, but I personally would keep looking.

    Welcome to Maine, unfortunately

Nothing I see is concerning. Id say thats about normal for a "new" and untreated vehicle here. As unfortunate as that is..

If you get a good deal on it and are willing to put a day or two of work into it cleaning, rinsing, and Fluid Filming the entire underside (including inside boxed sections of frame etc) Id say go for it. If you'd rather not put any work into it, as others said above Im sure you can find a similar truck from a different part of the country
