I have a 2012 Tacoma double cab long bed. Which truck cap do I need? Is there a specific company or is lear and ARE the best options- is there a serial number?

Whatever you want. Whatever fits. There's many companies including but not limited to (in no particular order) Leer, Snugtop, ARE, etc.
    fiberglass vs commercial
    and so on.

some have nice windows. Some don't.

Where I live Leer is the most practical choice. I don't necessarily have a brand preference. It's just that they are the easiest to get where I live. I have no doubt those made by ARE and others are as good, maybe better.

A lot depends on what you want. Some companies offer options others do not. I'm perfectly happy with the most basic version and Leer works for me. If there were something I absolutely had to have, and it was available on another brand then I might need to drive a couple of hours to even see it.

If you're looking to buy used be aware that the DCLB and the Access Cab have the same length bed, but the back of the cabs on those trucks are slightly different. I THINK you can make them work on either, but the fit near the cab will look wrong if you don't get the right one. And I may be wrong about even making them work.
