He's dead on about the sync, but idk how that will fix compression

He said the cylinders aren’t getting gas, but that compression should come back after the crank gear is fixed and the injectors start firing again.

$220 for a comp test? Dang. Seems very excessive especially if they have been wrenching on it for a bit. 30 minutes.

That includes a leak down and looking at the cylinders with a bore scope I think.

Anyway it’s basically a gamble to hope that the crank gear fixed it and the compression comes back once the injectors start firing again.

And? Literally an hour for it all. That's a chunk of change especially if they have been wrenching on it already. They should have already done it.

Just sounds like another generic mechanic that doesn't really know how easy these trucks are to work on and is quoting the worst case price

Yep. Just odd since these are about as easy as a lawnmower to fix hehe. But plenty of shady wrenches out there.

He told me there wouldn't be much point to it anyway since the crank is out of sync, so I just told him to go ahead and replace the crank gear.

200 bucks seems pretty standard for a compression test on a V6 at a mechanic. They have to make money somehow :notsure:

The other mechanic was a glorified parts changer. This guy is actually communicating what he thinks the issue is and outlining the options going forward.

Whatever is currently being an issue on my taco is above my skill level currently as a DiYr
I had a chat with a trusted Toyota trained indy shop about having a look into it
They refused to investigate and sent me elsewhere, excuse being that my truck is too damned old for them to bother with

If you say so. Sounds like they are a bit clueless, these are lawnmower engines.

I’ve encountered that too. And they’ll go and complain about how complex the electronics are on new stuff.

I mean in this case the only way to know what’s wrong is to take it apart and see what damaged the crank gear and what all else went wrong. I told him to go ahead and do it.

As BMW/Acura dealerships charge $189hr nowadays
    That $220 is reasonable
In addition, mech said/gave you option to dig in
    I don’t see a problem

took me a lil bit but now I understand that pix of borescope
CS sensor (basically a magnet) has attracted metal shavings
    That’s the white material
    I agree with his guess
“Something” has grenaded and STEEL particales have attracted to magnetic sensor

Without taking off T covers to investigate cannot be sure
Hell, maybe another 5RZ owner can guess more accurately, but I’m guessing 3hrs just to get off plastic T covers

this could be as simple as a failed Tbelt pulley/tensioner
Thing that worries me is that those shavings are steel not aluminum

He theorised someone might’ve dropped a bolt down there while working on it.
