My grandma used to call the couch a Davenport

 

That gives me the impression of a convertible sleeper. Daybed, Futon, etc.
Not so much the Sofa/Couch. Even different from the Chaise, Lounge, Longue, or Swoon/Fainting…

Only two hurricanes affected me personally, that I recall at the moment.


Hurricane Agnes - 1972

This one was no longer a hurricane by the time it got here, but it parked itself over Pennsylvania and wouldn't leave.
Day after day after day of heavy rain, and flooding like we never see here.
Pennsylvania hardly ever gets real flooding, but this was historic.

That Summer I was in the YCC (Youth Conservation Corps).
We were busy for awhile taking portable pumps to local schools and municipal buildings in Gettysburg, pumping out basements.


Hurricane Hugo - 1989

This one came barreling onshore in South Carolina and went northwest to the upstate, then northeast to eventually peter out.
I was living in Greenville at the time.
High winds and lots of rain.

What's funny is that for a few years afterwards the price on SYP (Southern Yellow Pine) lumber was dirt cheap.
I mean cheap.
Hugo knocked down a helluva lot of trees in the state's commercial pine plantations.
It took quite awhile to salvage all those trees.
Towards the end, much of that lumber was streaked with Blue Stain fungus, to which SYP is very prone.

 

I’ve got photos from many, but I will honestly say Katrina was horrific. Took a month to be allowed “home”. Watched news footage of only the roof visible of my best friend’s house. The drive to the house was nothing but dead looking trees snapped off at about 30’-40’ up. Any other structure was typically missing past that point as well. We won’t even start to talk about the permanent stain lines (yes, still there in many places) for high water or the pervasive smell.

EDIT: anybody who dealt with Sandy will know that heartbreak.
