Under the carpet through the grommet and follow the wire harness on the left side of truck that goes to gas tank.

I am running wiring for the tailgate lock and trying to follow the harness along the driver’s side. I am stuck trying to get the wires through along the gas tank and can’t figure out how to get the wires through. What am i missing. The install videos seem to skip this part. Any help?

The wire harness goes on top of the gas tank on the driver side of the truck frame. It’s a tight squeeze but if your truck is lifted you have no problem going in the left rear wheel well.

No lift for me. Left wheel well does not have much space. Biggest problem is the front of the wheel well at the body mount. Right there is almost no space.

Get a length of stiff wire like bailing wire or maybe an old coat hanger and tape your wiring to it. Feed the stiff wire through first and use it to fish the harness through. The stiff stuff will be easier to guide through the tight spaces and you can kind of bend it to the right shape for the needed curves.

If I remember right, the OEM tailgate lock runs along the passenger side, and plugs into the door lock circuit behind the passenger kick panel. If you have something besides the OEM, it might be different.

The tailgate lock cable also has a length of of metal insulation to help protect it from the heat of the exhaust on the passenger side

the directions for the OEM tailgate lock should tell ypu to run it on the passenger side. there is a few you tube videos on it. I had a lot of trouble with mine as it sad to zip tie it to a cable that all ready was in the right frame rail, but no cable on mine. the cable they tell you to use is for the AC outlet in the bed. If you have an SR5 or anything but a TRD you don't have the outlet and no cable. you just have to find places to zip tie too along the frame. I eventually got it.

It's a bit of a PITA, but you can use a fiberglass wire fishing pole or one of the reels from HFT, just take your time and be paintent. It's a pita but not impossible. Removing your spare might give you better visibility.

Some are intended to be ran on the driver's side. The ones for the passenger side have fiberglass/foil thermal insulation so that they're not damaged from the radiant exhaust heat.

Look up the instructions for the r4t tailgate lock. That is the best way to run your camera wire too. Passenger side up through a grommet under the front pass seat.

The Oem kit does indeed have a portion of the cable that has that insulation. Toyota engineed the kit well enough.

I had the pop and lock kit designed for driver’s side. I ran the wires up the passenger side and modded the kit to connect to passenger side door wires. Used wire tap connecters on the green and red wires.

Leveled with Bilstein 5100 shocks, Falken Rubitrek AT 265/75 tires, Redline hood struts, R4T tailgate lock, Matt Gecko LED strips in bed and under hood, WeatherTech hood guard, OEM bed mat, Husky floor mats, Carhart seat covers, Grille replacement with Toyota letters, Sony AX6000 head unit, OTT lite/mild tune, and an occasional splash of fuel additive.
I installed one of these locks and ran the wire up the passenger side along the rail, found some other wiring to use as a guide attached a couple tire wraps up under there, ran it up to the grommet under the seat no problem just took my time. I did not run on top of the gas tank, No need.
