Every year Bud, friend of the family and the local gas company foreman would have an all-night New Years’ eve party at the farm on the hill… bonfire, crockpots in the garage, dirt bikes, football in the snow, six-person Caterpillar tubing off the big jump. A real party.

After the grown ups had a few beers, someone would inevitably build a cannon out of empty pounders and duct tape. ‘WooHoo’, ‘HaHa’…

it was pretty quiet for awhile, folks just standing around the fire in the snow, then…

‘PHWOOMP!’

and we all saw a fireball heading into orbit. My old man had studied the problem, mixed his own fuel, trimmed the cans to logarithmically increase the baffle compartment / combustion chamber size and realized if the tennis ball was covered in grease it got a better seal (and caught fire during the launch). He was putting flaming tennis balls about 3 miles up the hollar and was the king of the drunk gas company rednecks for one night of the year.

Well, I was driving on a stretch of highway in Texas where the speed limit was 85. So, I tried it out. Nope, people should not be in a 2500 pound missle. Especially at my age and lack of coordination. The Prius will do 70 easily. That’s as fast as I need to go

My 155 horsepower 6MT clown-cart is far more fun than y'alls 500 hp muscle dragster. Its capable of popping the clutch and breaking it loose around a curve without upsetting the 40mph traffic you're stuck behind.

And it gets good mileage.
