I remember the 3rd Gen launch as chronicled here very well. There was an initial dissatisfaction with the shifting also and a continuing dissatisfaction with the power band of the smaller V6. What I don’t remember is the stories of tranny failures.

what I do remember is the general trend of threads when someone had a problem

1st was empathy for the OP and a declaration that Toyota would make it right
2nd was public self congratulations for not buying a 3rd Gen.
3rd was public ridicule directed at the OP for being in the truck when something went wrong and not buying a Raptor.

Yup. People also hated how the 3G looks. Today I consider it the best looking midsized truck. It’s the same cycle. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out again.

When I first saw photos of the 2024 interior, I thought finally someone put some thought into making use of limited space. Not just useless plastic expanse. Almost as if the designer actually travels:

They could have extended the molle panel back further.

Center bed molle arrived and installed. FYI, side bed molle panels currently on backorder with no ETA:

    Parts:

Bracket needs to be threaded first to the back side:

If anyone has the full set factory mounted, I would like some pictures of the mounts and bolts as I am left with a concerning amount of hardware:

Those look sharp. My sister’s husband put on an alu cab and it’s also super nice.

Don't know if this has been mentioned. I don't get that annoying open door chime like on the 3G truck. Just a popup on the instrument panel that shows which door is open. Don't miss that annoyance at all.

After a minute you'll get a pop up on your phone if a door is left open! :blahblah:

Ha. Although you have some granular control of notifications in your settings within the app.

I'm wondering if Toyota will ditch the mole panels, and center grab handle when they do an interior refresh? I'm guessing that will be dependent upon customer feedback. I'm interested in what people think about the Tacoma's interior design.

That stuff on the door would drive me nuts, as a person who does travel a lot think the interior storage is terrible, not a fan of tactic-cool nonsense and is target for thieves. “Oh! What’s in all those little sacks!?” It is too busy and easy to forget where you have shit stuffed. Can’t take an inventory by just glancing. Monkeying around with all those little bags looks like massive pain in the ass, it is like accessorizing Barbie but for dudes. I don’t get it.

They did the storage right on the extra cab, unfortunately made it hard to access. The rear storage of the double cabs is awful, gone are the plastic seat backs, they don’t fold completely flat. Under seat is ho hum, and how they hold the seat bottoms up is laughable, have to fumble with a strap and button. These trucks cost how much again? Like Toyota focused on the nonsense and forgot about the basics.

Find the overall design “ok” but overly busy with way too many nooks and crannies, I am in the dirt often, just looks a super pain in the ass to clean. Happen to like large flat expanses of plastic, easier to wipe down. Biggest gripe about the 3rd gen is, that it scratches by looking at it, plus the texture likes to grab bits of the rag.

There wouldn’t be an interior refresh until the 5th gen, so you’re stuck with this for at least 8-10 years.

The Land Cruiser is done right, nice and clean. The Taco looks like a hot mess. Might be my age, prefer simple and sophisticated, instead of busy and over stylized.

Flat floor and seat bottoms that used a lever/lock mechanism to hold in place would have been great. Those under seat cubbies are all but useless.

The interior is like it came from my brain into reality. That maybe a good or bad thing depending on your point of view.

I don't remember an interior refresh on the 3G. I remember chrome bumper endcaps going away. More Safety Sense stuff. Cameras. Cool colors. Android Auto/Carplay. Maybe someone can jog my memory on an interior refresh?

Edit: They added power seats in 2020ish.

I was thinking more of the door panel it self, most people who won't use the mole panel probably wouldn't mind it. If enough people complained or if it hurt sales Toyota might change the design, or maybe just on the Limited panels seem out of place on the Limited. 6G 4R could get different interior door panels, the mole might not be desirable to some 4R buyers? I doubt the panels would hurt sales that much on either vehicle.

Roughly 7" x 5" x 5.25", working around hinges and lips. M&P Shield 9 fits with an One Plus 8 Pro phone and room to spare.
