And they thought the fixture shouldn't have arrived as rusted as it did; got partial refund on it even though I didn't ask for anything.

That's just looking out for their customers holy shit.

Did you use flux on your filler metal?

    Just torch and filler rod
I’m not a fan of oxyacetylene welding but it’s in this class
    So here we are

When you learn oxyfuel welding/brazing, you'll pick up TIG a lot easier

    That’s fair,
    I already tig well
    Oxy is just dirty tig
But man, the whole getting the torch settings hot enough to keep it melting..
These school rigs don’t maintain pressure well at all and I really should have purchased my own tip but 80$ tip for a total of 4 classes on it seemed lame

    To clarify
I am admittedly bad at this oxy process haha

Just get yourself one of these

    TipCleanerSetCarburetorCleanerSet_1200x1200.jpg

If you're in school, they should be teaching you about oxidizing, carburizing, and neutral flames

Acetylene goes on first, adjust, then oxygen

No one starts oxyfuel being really good at it

Think we're all pretty bad at it when we first start, some just worse than others

The rigs leak and the tips are trashed ontop of dirty
You are right on the mark with your observations.
that one weld pictured was only possible after cranking my pressures up above what The gage said was 5 and 50
    And borrowing my instructors tip.

not sure if you have this issue but a whole room full of pops and hiss from other students smothering their flame doesn’t help much with making you a tiny bit jumpy :anonymous:
    Here’s a BAD one I did haha
    985AB9D6-0462-4A01-988E-746405641AD1.jpg
took so long with low pressures to get the metal to melt that by the time it got puddled it was already getting too hot

    My instructor is super good
This will be my second school just to get access to different perspectives and more experience/seat time
But this class has me excited cause my instructor is a CWI and his aluminum tig is WILDLY good.
And I consider myself pretty damn good with aluminum

    Oof

Yeah I remember all the popping now that you say that

Don't know how many times I've helped set the flame for others, constantly telling them what to look for

I may just bring my own setup if I were you, if it's really that bad

Brazing was fun though! My first project I did.

I learned gas welding using coat hangers. Non of those welds looked good.

Couldn't find the paint fast enough.

been a few decades since I gas welded, but I remember using flux, we would heat the filler rod up red hot dip it in the flux and weld a bit then repeat. I know we used 20 mule team borax in the foundry for aluminum and brass/bronze casting.

I just renewed mine. I buy something once every few years. There's either junk or big $ collectible stuff. Nothing in between like the old days.

Since PrimeWeld had given me a partial refund on my table, I thought I'd spend some of that money on their bolt kit for putting the two fixtures together.

Can't wait to do so, but even now I checked the flatness of the new table and the largest shim I can get underneath is .008"

Actually A LOT of assembly. Took me an hour just to open and go through all the boxes. Now I have to find a friend with a hoist…
