With mine, the brushes didn't go out all at once - the battery light on the dash would blink on and off occasionally, so I knew something was up. That said, I agree with the idea of preventative maintenance on equipment you rely on.

so what’s your service interval for an unknown alternator?
If someone is really that worried about it sounds like they shouldn’t be out there in the middle of nowhere to begin with unless they have a vehicle with 10,000 miles or less.
Any component can break it any time
Don’t matter if it’s a transfer case an alternator differential or just a broken tie rod anyone of them will leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere except for an alternator you could actually probably limp it back before the batteries completely dead.
It’s easy to throw parts of stuff and spend other peoples money

So after some consideration I am going to just replace the brushes as "maintenance". They are cheap. I get 14.2V after starting the truck but I do a lot of short trips and even with a fresh battery I am not seeing the resting voltage at the battery that I would like so while voltage is good I am not sure it's really pushing the amps like expected. Plus, I have a CB with a big linear, winch, stereo amps, so I prefer to be stay ahead of it. I will change the brushes next week and report back.

I have had a bunch of Toyotas and BMWs that went close to 200K on the original alt so frankly It don't worry about it. But this truck is a toy and my wife and me are out in the Oregon forest alone frequently so seemed like some good preventative maintenance. But honestly I really don't worry. My dad bought this truck new and it has never failed to get anyone home ever. I inherited it from him some time ago and it's been great. Very dependable. I would drive it cross country at a moments notice as-is. Not sure I would want to...but the truck would make it hehe.

Totally missed the point. Comprehension problem? Not going to try to clarify for you. Maintain, repair, replace when ever you want. You apparently have a different approach. Do or don’t as you see fit.

Now I'm thinking the same. It's nice keeping my own OEM stuff that I know fits perfectly, and the aftermarket brushes are dirt cheap. Are those brushes easy to replace in the assembly? The aftermarket brushes are just the 2 brushes with a bare copper cable on each. Every video shows replacing it with the entire assembly surrounding the brushes, which is the only way Toyota sells them.

Has anyone got the oem part numbers for the brushes? Mine is working fine now, but I just ticked over 200k. I should either refurbish the oem or check into the higher amp alternatives

    No comprehension problem here.

Rebuilding seats with leather from furniture and extra padding. Might put leather on the dash and other interior parts.
Mine lasted to over 450k. Swapped in an aftermarket fo 60 bucks. I will fix the original with a rebuild kit and new diodes...someday.

I also have a 90 Mustang 350 hp and I can never understand how come my Tacoma gets more respect Just got a 99 Jeep TJ that I rebuilt, and painted in the garage
Mine went at 285K and I panicked and took it to a shop for a new Denso for $600. Im still crying because I never do a mechanic. He only installs new not rebuilt. I should have rebuilt it infront of the TV on a Sunday

A common theme has emerged: Hang onto your OE unit for a proper rebuild, that $35 core charge is not worth giving up a very repairable old Denso especially if you have a good old school alt rebuilder within driving distance. Not many left. In the 80's you could throw a rock and hit a good alt/starter shop. Now I can find one within 30 miles.

Installing the brushes is easy and is very DIY friendly. If a new one is needed, going through RockAuto would be my choice. The remanufactured (from Denso) one for my truck would be $170.79 with the core.

Yep, brushes are super easy. Not sure a rebuilt Denso from RA is a particularly high quality rebuild though. Maybe 15 years ago. RA sells a lot of crap. I would rather have a good shop rebuild my original.
