We camped on NC105 last night. I gotta say, I'm not sure it was worth the 3 hour drive. Crowded and dusty. There are some really good camp sites but they were all taken. Most campsites have no view or privacy. The spot we finally picked had used toilet paper all over the ground. We drove the entire length of the road and only one section was rough. The rest is bumpy but not difficult . There were people driving it in Honda Civics.

Great views up there though. I'd like to see it in the fall.

My wife and I went back at the end of May. Kind of the same as mentioned ^^^

Wasn’t too terribly crowded since we went during the week and the weather was great for venturing out on several of the hiking trails. I’ve spent a lot of time in Linville Gorge over the years but had never been on the other side of 105 past Wiseman’s View. We started on the Lake James side and ended at the falls.

    Stock for now
We’ve visited NC 1238 in the Linville Falls / Wiseman’s View area on day trips from Black Mountain, NC in a stock Honda Pilot and my wife’s 4Runner. Looking to visit this Fall in my Tacoma for some camping, what are some other roads to check out for dispersed camping in this area? (6 hr drive for us from KY)

There are several other FS roads there in Pisgah. Table Rock, Maple Sally, and Ila few others I can’t remember. OnX Off-road has added quite a few to the area that unrated so far but none of them were difficult by any means and all in pretty close proximity to Old NC 105. We did several of them while up there a few weeks ago.

ETA the hornets were terrible in a few of the camp areas. One night we couldn’t even run lights around camp because they were swarming to the light.

Anyone been to old 105 since Helene? Had an eye towards it as a break-in trail for mine once I finish getting caught up on maintenance.
