I dropped new Kenwood speakers into my 23 TRD OR (non-JBL) and as I basically expected it sounds better but the volume difference front/back drives me nuts. Between that and the overall sluggishness of the OEM ahead unit, I’m thinking about replacing it.

Am I correct that my non-JBL truck drives the speakers from the head unit and not a separate amp, and that should bring the rears up a bit?

    correct on the first part.

the last part, there's some that can be done with power, but the location and acoustics of the rear speakers are horrific. to make them sound good, a voodoo doctor might be a better call.

Yeah rear speakers are just in a bad spot. Amp will add more power to them and allow you to balance them out better, but don’t expect miracles.
It’s equivalent to having music in the house playing on two different speakers, but one is in a different room. You can crank the volume, but it will only get you so far
