I'm just thinking for convenience sake to not have to run so much wire to either put it in the dash or the door.

Tweeters installed. Haven't tried them out yet as they're not hooked up

Water damage and ease of adjusting settings are the main reasons. Speaker wire is cheaper than a crossover. I would try and get the crossovers and amp close to eachother. This also makes going active easier down the road, since your wire is already ran from the amp location to the drivers.

I'd be running wires from the head unit to the amp back to the head unit then to the speakers so maybe behind the head unit wouldn't be a bad spot..

Amp rack would be ideal. What components are you running?

Massive audio 3way component set with passive crossover. Had them mounted in a temporary boom box setup with a 200w amp and they sounded amazing so I'm hopeful they will do great in the Tacoma.
Right now I'm geared towards a small dsp amp like the kicker key. I'm thinking it will easily fit behind the radio.

Heard good things about that set. Factory headunit? Not sure if the kicker will push those. A 4 channel bridged and separate dsp might be better.

So how'd it go? Did you go with crossovers behind radio? I'm looking at the same massive 3way components but still figuring out where to run things.
