I just recently ( like Friday) got my first Tacoma—incredibly stoked—and now I'm looking to customize this truck and make it mine. I have a few ideas, but one thing I would love to do, if possible, is make my truck bed more versatile. I really want to add a way to mount sand wedges to the bed somehow, but Idk if I can do it without ruining it. I was envisioning some sort of clamp thats drilled into the side wall but, like i said, idk if thats possible. I would take the easy route and get one of those cage things, but I don't have the money. I would also like to be able to add a mount for a shovel or other tools so they don't slide around in the back. I may just be a vain teenager that is stupid, but please let me know if this is possible, and how i can do it.

I would start with maintenance assistance items and safety issues. Replace H11 low beams with H9 low beams ... just remove remove the green insert. Get a tailgate lock to (help, not guarantee) prevent tailgate theft. Maybe add bed stiffeners. VLed LED taillights make a difference. OEM Bedlights at the back of the bed are good.

But if you insist ... molle panels can be had that attach to the sides of the bed and then attach items to the molle panels. Better than attacking directly to bed side-walls.

Congratulations. It's always useful to tell us the year and trim of the vehicle. You can do that in your profile or in the body of your post. It may not matter for these particular questions, but it will matter someday.

If you took a loan for the purchase, the best way is to pay it off!

Basic maintenance and safety items of course are required to be kept up with on any vehicle, but modifications can wait.

Run an amortization chart on the loan you may have, it's easy to see how much you'll save with an early payoff. Which means you'll have more disposable income.

Best wishes for a fun journey!

Agreed ... pay it off early. It is amazing how much time can be taken off the loan with just $100 extra per month, or every other month. Bites into the principal instead directly and reduces the future interest.

No worries. I shoulda made that leap. I wouldn't suggest drilling into the bed unless you are 100% sure you want something there FOREVER. It's better to use the bed rails.

Honestly though, If eventually you do want a bed rack, like for a RTT or something, I'd just throw stuff in the bed for now and wait til you have the money for the bed rack to mount your stuff to.

I usually just throw my Maxtrax in the truck bed, either beside my camper or just thrown in the bed with a cable and padlock to make sure they don't walk off.

Vain and stupid; then you'll fit right in here brother. My advice, don't be that guy who straps a Home Depot's worth of crap to a bed rack and never touches any of it. Spend your fun money on a kick ass set of AT tires and call it a day.

Whatever is mounted on the bedsides is subject to finding it's way into someone elses life unless it's secured by a locking cover of some type.

Just toss them in when heading out.

And if you live in road salt country, learning how to protect your frame is quite important.

Very nice. I'd just toss the Maxtrax in the bed under that tonneau and not worry about it.

A couple tubs from HD or Costco in the bed, under the tonneau might be good for organizing. I used two of these (pretty sure it was this size) for a long time to keep all my camping stuff in. They fit either direction between the wheel wells. A lil under 40 inches long I think (wheel well opening is ~42). Actually, I still use them for my camping stuff, but it just lives in the garage now that I have an actual camper on my truck. But if I did want to ground camp, it'd only take me 20 minutes to throw on my tonneau and load these in the truck!

    Nice truck.

But the first lesson to learn is: Use the truck, find what you want to do that it cannot do. "Stock" Offroad is pretty capable already. Find the need first, then consider the amount to spend on it. There is a reason there is a :spending: picture to attach to posts.

Sounds like you don't need much anything else then. As @RichochetRabbit said, just use the truck and decide what you actually NEED over time.
