Even if under 18, a licensed driver is responsible enough to know. Or even if unlicensed, that's the risk they took.

I used to joke if I saw a BMW or a MB parked in front of an apartment or bad area, they spent so much on the car they have nothing left.

My favorite answer to "why so much $$?" is "because that's how much it costs"

 

Possible, at least then there's the counter of "well if you own the car and weren't driving it, who was?" Let them take the fall for it worst case.

An unlicensed driver is the worst - usually those phucks don't have shit . . . .
So they damage your car
No license = definitely no insurance
And no assets [so nothing to sue for]
So those fukers get off scott free . . .
What is the state gonna do, take their license?? fine them??? then they plead poverty and -poof-
Until the state actually punishes these people - and starts seizing the vehicles - there is almost no consequence - except to the rest of us that get to pay out the backside for auto insurance to make up for this crap..

That's just it. Judgment proof, sadly. At least if you get a judgment there's a chance that it will eventually bear fruit, I think it's as important to hit them criminally as well so that will at least leave a mark.

Couldn't agree more re vehicle seizure. Usually too it's those people who are wearing nice clothes, jewelry, etc etc that probably wasn't free.

The police are gonna say it’s a civil matter. They aren’t gonna go after him for a bit and run. He could have even been tanked when this happened. All he has to say is he didn’t realize he hit you. That will be the end of it besides his insurance having to get involved.

The community security could have this guy on video, again nothing will change.

That said, this sucks. But atleast one way or the other the truck will be fixed.

He or she (car owner) can say that they were not driving but that does not make a difference. Most, if not all states have what's call an owner liability law. Meaning that if something like this happens, or say they flee from the police, they either give up the person who they say was driving or they own it, both criminally and/or civilly. LOL, wrong again. The police will "do shit." if they can. I've been in Law Enforcement for 36 years and have arrested many people for hit and run. Recently, I had a hit and run investigation and it was solved by plastic body parts left behind. I gathered up the pieces and used Google to to search the part numbers found on the plastic pieces left behind. The part numbers gave me the year, make and model of the striking vehicle. I then used the tax office to search for cars registered in town that match. The last one was a Nissan Rogue and there were over 800 of those. I went to each residence until I found the one who said their car was in the shop. I went to the shop and matched the parts left behind to the car. We actually get satisfaction finding these scumbags.

The only time I ever seen police going after someone and investigating something like this is where a pedestrian was hit or some real serious property damage. The damage may be extreme to OP and even a bit pricey. Maybe after the fact the guy gets a summons for leaving the seen of an accident. That’s about it.

 

It's done all the time where I'm from. A Summons= a court date.

 

I know that. I still don’t see it happening. Pretty sure the police will call it a civil matter.

It may vary by state, but if I understand correctly the individual can ask to have charges filed regardless?

 

An accident is a civil matter, an accident where there is damage or injury and one person flees is a criminal matter.

 

Yes, they will be charged. Now, lets say that the person who hit the op's truck turns out to be a 95 yr. old man, who barely knows how to get home. It is reasonable to believe that the old guy may not have even noticed he hit the op's truck. If that's the case, then a reasonable person (you, me, the police) would believe no crime has been committed as there was no intent to evade responsibility. Hope that makes sense.
