i haven’t noticed for the longest time up until recently, but does your guy’s truck kick hard while shifting in reverse or drive? i want to make sure this a normal characteristic and not an anomaly.. TIA!

I mean it depends on what you mean by hard. I get a bit of a pop once in awhile. All depends on how the trans is loaded at the time.

No it does not. 171k miles pretty much all stock and on original transmission fluid. I've had no reason what so ever to question the fluid condition or level.

I also always come to a complete stop before changing direction unlike my wife and daughter that thinks their automatic's are like a video game joystick.

I also don't just start and go. I start the engine then do my seat belt, put my crap away and take care of stuff like the sun visors and sun shade. Once out of the neighborhood and on open road I don't hesitate to nail it if needed and let the automatic do it's thing.

I wouldn't say hard but I noticed after a long drive I can feel it bump into gear.

Find a used 3rd Gen on a lot and take a test drive. If your Kick is more noticeable, then check fluid level, motor and transmission mounts and U-joints.

    no, mine does not.
Can you take a video so we have a better idea?

Another guess: is this happening when parking on a hill? If so, you may be loading the parking pawl. This could make a pop/clunk in any automatic transmission. If so, when parking, leave foot on brake, shift to Park and slowly let off brake. Or better yet, use parking brake before shifting to Park.
Just an idea, it sounds obvious but I see people do this nearly daily- park on a hill, shift to Park, let off the brake and let the parking pawl take a shot, while the vehicle rocks back n forth. Of course when they return to their vehicle, there is a load on the parking pawl, and a clunk will be heard when shifting from park.

Yes but it doesn't jerk me anywhere. Just little more noticeable.

Shifts smooth as butter normal driving so I'm not worried.

How about asking the dealer to start it up and shift through P R N D and back so you can make sure their truck does not have and transmission problems?

    "that's completely normal sir"

do you really think they're gonna genuinely help a concerning customer..? as somebody who's worked in a dealership, them service writers only care about what's going to make them money, not waste their time.

Mine did a little before the first fluid drain and fill. It was about 1/2 quart low from the factory. Also, if the parking break is off and the truck rolls or settles a little and then is shifted into drive or reverse it will clunk (driveline mesh/binding I think).

I have noticed the occasional driveline clunk when ECT is engaged for a long drive and the truck is accelerating from a low gear. I think it's u joint related. Probably due for grease.
