Hey everyone, I hope you all are doing well. This is my first post here on TW, but sadly it's on a more negative and less fun topic.

For context I just one week ago purchased this 2015 Tacoma TRD Off Road with 145k miles on the clock and have been driving it mainly to work and back as I wait for all the parts for maintenance to arrive.

Today I was driving home from work, and as I was 2.5 miles from my drive way I get the check engine and traction control light, I did not pull over as I did not think much of it and did not notice any power loss or limp mode. I did not notice probably as my street is only 40mph speed limit and I drive very slowly anyway.
So I pull into my driveway, and the second I turn off the engine I see steam coming from the engine bay. I open the hood, and there is coolant everywhere. I inspect the reservoir and there is no coolant and the bottom hose of the reservoir is gone just below the clamp. I also see where the hose went as in between my radiator fan motor I see a birds nest of ripped up hose, so the radiator fan motor sucked it up as it came off. Of course the one time I am not constantly checking the temp gauge I get a coolant issue.
I am curious, assuming I only drove it just down my street as I got the lights and the rest of my commute was seemingly normal, what is the potential I caused major damage to the engine? I know I won't fully know till I replace hose and refill and reflush coolant, but just curious as I feel I stopped driving barely fast enough.

I am wondering has anyone else experienced this?

If so, what is the OEM part # for the bottom coolant reservoir hose?

I will include images both on thread and on this link: https://imgur.com/a/oGkXrdB

Let me know if the link or images do not display currently.

Also based on the images and info provided, will I be able to effectively remove the belt from the fan motor, or will I have to take it apart and potentially replace? Asking as I am unsure if it is similar to a boat motor or fishing reel where you need to take apart to properly remove a braided line for example. And is this something I can do DIY, or best in a more accredited mechanics hands?

    Thank you in advance!

That would be your engine belt that is wrapped around the fan, likely the belt fragments slapping around cut a hole in one or more coolant hoses. Check your radiator I bets it's low or empty, hopefully the engine isn't hurt.

There is no hose that goes to that port on the overflow bottle, it's just a cap for draining it.

The traction control and engine light where on was the temp?
Did you turn the key back onto accessory mode and see if the temperature gauge was all the way up and the light was on?

Yes I turned just before powering on the engine and temp gauge was up high. No temp light though.

Ah okay thank you, can you send me the part # for the engine belt? And is that separate from the serpentine belt because I could not see any other belt or where a belt could have come from unless I am missing something.

There is only one belt, that would be the engine/serpentine belt. Should be pretty obvious if it came apart.

Make sure none of it is wrapped around behind the crank pulley, if it is you will likely need a front crank seal as well.

Just changed mine a few weeks ago because I noticed a cut in it.

    So after
Gotcha thank you, yeah I just received the serpentine belt replacement today luckily, but now have to order the hoses lol.

As I read these replies and think about it now I think this is the more likely story: When the lights came on the dash is when the hose started getting caught and chewed up and spun around, and when I parked and turned off the engine that is when the fan spun hard and sliced the radiator hose, thus causing the steam from the hot fluid hitting the engine immediately after shutdown.

I will get a better look tomorrow under the truck in the daylight to see what exactly and where it is all caught up, and where the cut is. I appreciate the advice!

Anything else I should know or that I should buy? And is the crank pulley the fan motor that was spinning around the belt?

There's no fan "motor". The water pump pulley has a pink shaft bolted to the front that drives the fan. The finned aluminum piece at the fan hub is a viscous clutch that lets the fan spin slower than the water pump when the coolant is cold. With the belt shredded, the water pump and fan won't be driven. Hopefully you didn't overheat the engine to the point of causing damage.

I'm thinking the lights came on when the engine overheated, if you check codes I bet you have a P0117 (ECT Sensor circuit short) and/or p0115 (ECT Sensor Circuit) which would indicate a very high coolant temp.

Need to get all the pieces of belt unwrapped off everything, put some water in the radiator, see what's leaking, and see what else is damaged.

Crank pulley would be the crankshaft pulley on the engine.

Concur, there is no hose at bottom of the reservoir, although that clamp is looking pretty rusty.

I don’t think the check-engine and traction-control lights come on due to overheating, unless some other component becomes damaged due to excessive heat or the belt damaging a sensor or wiring or such.

They will if it gets hot enough to trip an ECT Sensor Circuit Low Input (Short) code which according to service info would be if the coolant temp exceeded 283F. Hopefully this isn't the case because aluminum engines don't like being overheated.

Ah I see, thank you! That is exactly what I will do then.

Yeah I am going to replace any other rusted clamps as well to be safe and see if any other wirings or hoses got caught up, thank you.

Yeah that makes me very worried actually, I should have pulled over immediately even though I was 4 minutes from home, but the temp gauge did not update fast enough I am afraid.

I really hope my engine is not fried.

    Ah smart thank you!

If I have all this done, assuming if I start up the engine and I do not hear anything funky, would it be overkill to have someone inspect the engine further? Just really worried of major damage from the heat.
