I am working on a box to put into the vent area of the dash to hold a single din or possible a double din car radio chassis. Some modification will have to be done and possibly a 3D print of the bezel. I will post picture as this project takes off in the next couple of weeks.

The posibilities are endless, but I am working on the single din first since I already have the radio as a template.

The entire top section will have to be modified and the bottom where the factory double din was will somehow hold the air ducts and maybe some switches.

Here is a 3D print of the single din type for the floating screen, it’s going to be for my Alpine flagship model Alpine Halo11 iLX-F511 Digital multimedia receiver 11" 1-DIN Touchscreen.

It’s going to look sort of like the newer trucks where the radio is on top with the touch screen slightly higher than the dashboard, giving it a floating screen feel. I got the idea from another 1st gen owner, here take a look at this YouTube video.

That’ll be great positioning once complete. I mounted mine in the stock location and 3D printed a new shift knob so it’d fit. It works, but definitely is not an ideal location for a touch screen.

One question, are you just deleting the center air vents?

I am relocating the air vents lower to where the stock radio would had been , but it’s going to swivel 360 degrees , so you can direct the air anywhere you choose.

I am very interested to see how this plays out. Will you be willing to make the custom parts for others to complete this project too?

I would not mind helping out any which way I can, about mass production , I do not know about that, But the 3D print can be done with the measurements any 3D print shop can do it. I will be posting lots of pictures and what I did, Also keep in mind the passenger side air bag switch can be deleted or placed somewhere else on the dashboard or your airbag light will come on. its one of the items you would loose by moving the radio to that position.

Is your radio a single din unit?

Mine is double DIN, so a bit more difficult to fit.

Man, if you can pull that off, it sounds like it will be great. Looking forward to the results.

You need the climate control faceplate & knobs out of an 01-02 SR5 4Runner. Those have white tint on the back instead of orange, allowing you to use any color bulb.
