I’m driving my 2005 Tacoma 6-speed Double Cab TRD SR5 from Colorado to the SF Bay Area late October and will need to sell my truck once I get there.

I originally bought it new in California. It’s registered in Colorado. Do I need to do anything in California before I can sell it?

270k miles has a second engine that now has about 170k miles on it.

You need to smog it in commiefornia, you purchased it in California but I’m assuming you never registered it here so you might need to get it weighed at a cat scale as well (or the new owner)

I did register in California. It had Cali plates at one time since I lived there with it. Then I moved to Colorado and registered it there.

I have sold 4 vehicles with Craig’s list, I have always provided a bill of sale, once you make a sale it’s not your obligation if it’s legal in every state. I always stated in my bill of sale ( As Is )

Can’t do that in California, per the dmv and carb (California air resources board) the seller is legally required to smog the vehicle, if you do the as is thing and it doesn’t pass smog the seller will be legally and financially responsible to pay for all repairs

Ok since it’s been registered in California and in the system then you do no need to have it weighed

Sell it before you get there. Then you don't have to smog it

It’s not the same level of smog, my truck will pass in 49 states with the exception being CA. Chances are if this truck is stock and in good condition there’s no reason it won’t pass though

@Ttruck - sell truck in Colorado 1st before moving . What happen to the original engine and just what is considered a new engine? Those questions would be ask by any prospective buyer.

California resale prices for Tacomas are insane. Don't know how they are in Colorado.
I looked for a couple of years waiting for the prices to come down. Never happened. I did finally find a local TRD OR and paid what I think was way too much, but it was a low mileage(115k)bone stock with almost perfect paint and interior.
