2013 Tacoma 4.0L automatic direct fit a 2005?

So I’m going out to buy an automatic transmission out of a 2013 4.0L Tacoma. And want to make sure it will fit my 2005 4.0L automatic. Is it a direct fit or do I need to make any modifications? My transmission is on 360K+ miles and feels like it’s gonna give out any day. This 2013 supposedly had 135K miles.

really want to make sure it’ll fit or what needs to be changed to fit. Thanks in advance

 

On paper, it won’t work, if you want to believe that there were in fact 3 different versions of the transmission in these truck.

In practice, it will work.
We know this because others have done it.

At some point the transmission was tuned different on later year models.
@nd4spdbh may know if that would make a difference. But don’t think it would?
The hard parts are the same. Only the logic of the software would be different.
And AFAIK, the transmissions are not, and have never been VIN locked on these trucks.
