    For future me, since I'm sure this will happen again. To get the guard off, I just took a flat head screwdriver on each side and gave a gentle push out and up. Just clips to the quick connect like a binder clip.

    I know it's an old thread, but I found the first post useful. I tried to manually pump gas from the line, like the pictures in the first post, but I completely agree that it would take a lot of effort and time. Too much for me.
    The black cover just pops off and the fuel line disconnects by pinching the sides.

    I remembered I had a basic 12V fuel transfer pump, so I tried fitting it on and it worked. The rate of transfer was slow, but now I could just leave it and do something else productive. I had 15 gallons to remove and I got through in about 1.5 hours. I used something similar to this:
