Will steel wheels from a 2021 fit a 2008 okay?

I just bought a 2008 4wd 2.7 and its OE steel wheels have bad surface rust. I found some OE steel wheels from a 2021 in excellent shape and a good price. Toyota lists the offset on the 2008 as wheels as 28-32 mm and on the 2021 as 23-27 mm. Will this be a problem as long as I stick with 265/70/16 tires? TIA!

And a followup question: My 2008 OE wheels (old tires) and the 2021 OE wheels (no tires) have good TPMS sensors. Any issues there if I just swap the wheels when I get new tires?

TPMS sensors are not compatible between 2nd and 3rd gen trucks

Thanx much! That tells me the tire shop will need to transplant so I keep my sensors. Maybe can sell the 3G sensors.

Any opinion on the wheel offset difference? Seems too small to be a problem.

I don't know about the offset
given the 8~10 year life of the sensors you might want to figure how old your old ones are
over 5 years I'd probably get new ones

When I bought the truck, the TPMS light was on during my test drive, so I mentioned it and a couple of other things. I was told they took it to a nearby shop and had them all replaced.

So that just leaves me with the offset question, but the difference is only 5mm and 265x70x16 is the larger of the two OE tire sizes (245x75x16 on it now) listed by Toyota.

Anybody else out there who would worry about the OE wheel offset difference when putting Gen3 wheels on a Gen2 truck?

I didn't know about the offset but just put some 2022 steel take off's on my 06 4X4. They fit fine but I only run stock size tires.

I just purchased the almost new tires with steel wheels and TPMS modules from a 2022. I actually bought them for a gen 1 but put them on my 06. Just for grins I tried to program the gen 3 TPMS modules to my truck. My Autel 508 would only read the gen 3 sensors when I selected a 2015 or newer Tacoma in the program. Using the relearn function and selecting the 2015 or newer truck the 508 would only read 4 sensors. (Selecting a 05-08 requires me read 5 sensors) The 508 would try to write then it would indicate for me to press back and let me read the spare and retry. It would indicate the program in progress and after a minute would say it failed due to the spare. I tried this a few times before giving up. I have driven the truck about 200 miles since the re-learn with the gen 3 sensors and the TPMS light is still off. I would like to know what the actual difference between the gen 3 and gen2 sensors is since they both use the same frequency. Hopefully I got lucky.

I solved the question about wheel offset.....too small to worry about (after looking at all four corners at all conceivable conditions of load in the bed and front wheel steering angle). So the new (larger) tires went on the OE steel wheels with no problems.

BUT My TPMS light still comes on at random times for no apparent reason. I am nibbling away at a few things toward the rear so the spare is sitting on the garage floor. I can make the TPMS light go away by just resetting it. Might be okay for a day or a week+. When it comes on, it flashes for awhile and then stays steady on. I have considered the possibility that they did NOT actually replace the sensors but just reset the system as instructed in the owners handbook. Others have mentioned the Gen2/3 differences and I've decided it's a black hole of time/money/distraction to worry about. My 09 Honda Fit has a TPMS which has never been a problem whatsoever, through several sets of tires. So I just check the Taco pressures occasionally and reset the system when/if it bugs me. Also considering the "Canadian solution" for the spare....ie leave the spare in the garage and carry a can of flat-fix in the truck.

It puzzles me about the Gen 2/3 difference with your reader/programmer device....ie it wants 5 sensors for Gen 2 but only 4 for Gen 3. Does that mean Gen 3 Tacos don't have a full-size spare?

No, It means Tacoma's stopped using senors in spares during the 2009 model year and never went back.

So your 08 is looking for 5.

Only selecting the 05-08 Tacoma in the TS508 program requires me to read 5 sensors. All other years only let you read 4.
Bill is correct in saying you need a TPMS sensor in the spare.

Right after I bought the truck I carried the spare in the bed for awhile rather than underneath in the original PITA location. Random TPMS behavior seems to be unrelated to where the spare is located (underneath, in the bed, or left in the garage where it is now). When I was told they replaced "all" the sensors before I bought, I assumed they meant only the 4 on the ground, not 5, because the spare had obviously not been disturbed. Seems to me this reduces to a short-term quirk in early Gen 2 only....ie Toyota's first experiment with TPMS, and they eliminated some of the hassles from 09 onward. This 08 is going to be mostly for very low mileage local use, getting firewood and building/landscaping materials. I'll just take care of the tires the old fashioned way. Thanx for the info, guys!

Just get a tpms put in the spare
It’s really nice to get an alert when your spare is low, instead of finding out when you need it

Offset difference is definitely not going to be an issue.
