I will trade in my manual before driving it like this haha. No way am I letting the engine slow me down while I'm trying to accelerate. If I'm not in a hurry I'll let the revs drop with the clutch disengaged, otherwise I'll accept the minuscule amount of clutch wear.

I wouldn't worry too much about the rev hang. A lot of people overblow it because they're very picky. Most of the vehicles I've owned over the last 20 years have been manual transmissions. Yes, I do prefer the older style without rev hang but found it's quite easy to get used to and I don't even notice anymore. When I started driving a newer Subaru with a manual transmission, it definitely felt weird at first, but I adapted quickly and I stop noticing after a couple months. If you like a manual transmission then it blows any automatic way out of the water drive wise. So much more fun even with the modern electronic stuff.

I don't get why people are so picky about it on a truck. You're not buying a sports car, it's a truck. And if you do want maximum performance, the modern automatic transmissions are better than a human shifting anyways.

I agree. I’m hung too on my third gen revs and in other ways, and it’s working out fine for me.

What’s not clear from the first video you posted - is iMT (intelligent manual transmission) mode turned on? I would guess if it is on, Rev hang would be worse. I’ll have my manual TRD off road at the end of this month and will report back.

Yea that sounds terrible lol. If I lifted for 3 seconds in 1st gear, the engine braking would basically scrub off all speed and I would barely be moving after releasing the clutch in 2nd. I find driving any MT is more by feel than anything. It’s obvious when you release the clutch after a gear change whether or not you have the timing right and need to make a slight adjustment. My wife asked me once why the 5-6 shift always felt like there was a “thud” when she shifted. I told her she needed to let the clutch out slightly faster or slightly slower. Problem solved.
For the OP, as someone else said, the 2nd gen 4.0 V6 was way worse than the 3rd gen. It does seem worse at higher RPMs, but if I’m at 6000 in 2nd gear, I’m ripping that shit into 3rd as fast as I can. A little clutch slip now and then isn’t going to hurt anything. I’ve been driving MT Toyotas for 20 years, some with very high mileage, all with original clutches.

This is the way. The rev-hang in my 3rd gen never bothered me, but I drive leisurely most of the time. That being said, if the 8speed is as good as they say it is, I dont know why people would opt for the manual.

IMT only helps rev match down shifts and helps prevent stalls when launching in 1st.

I been driving manual transmissions all my life. Honestly, I don’t know what “rev hang,” is. I install short throw shifter in my Tacoma, no problems.

Just tested an MT SR, happy to say I believe this to be the best Manual Tacoma ever. Rev hang was not at an issue at all under normal driving, and I much preferred it to the 3rd gen MT V6 combo.

I had two 3rd gen manuals and never even noticed any rev hang. I don't shift aggressively though. I'll eventually get a 4th Gen manual Sport once the hype dies down and the mega-fanbois pay full MSRP to be the first to have one.

I have a 3rd gen MT. You get used to it, but i never noticed much rev-hang. And if there is it isn't much of an issue. Like someone else said you adapt just like driving a different car.
Remember this is a pickup truck- its not going to have the slick 6sp of a Honda S2k's snick, snick shifts. Throws are long and the 3rd Gen MT does not like to be rushed- Drive the truck like a sports car and the MT will remind you of this. I came off a 2017 VW GTI MT and loved that car but it was an adjustment going to the Tacoma MT. That being said i'll take the MT in the Tacoma any day of the week over an auto.

The 3rd gen wants to rev high, and the 6MT lets you do it. I noticed the rev hang when I first got the truck. I slowed down the shift slightly over time, and increased the revs to find out what it liked.

It feels more like a feature than a bug to me now. I routinely shift around 4k RPM, and if you push it slightly further and shift up into the rev hang in 3rd, you'll be quite impressed with the V6.

Truck wants to be revved high, which is different than being driven hard imo. I'll do a quick shift to take advantage of the revs every once in awhile, but slowing the shift speed down feels like the key to longevity on this transmission and clutch. 62k miles on original clutch -- hoping for 100k+

Toyota wants to hit EPA/MPG numbers, potentially to the detriment of longevity.

Throwing in my vote for the manual. I have a 2017 PRO with 61k miles, purchased new. Don’t notice rev hang. Only issue I experienced was the common clutch pedal creak, which was remedied with multiple applications of high-temp ceramic break parts lubricant. The long throws become satisfying with time—fitting for the Taco—and as others have mentioned, the driving enjoyment increases in the higher rev range. #savethemanuals!

Yeah, there's a huge difference between a VW and Tacoma manual, but I'll take a manual over an auto in the Taco any day. Certainly wasn't as buttery-smooth and effortless as the 6 speed in my Golf Alltrack, but still great to drive!

If you get the tune and remove the rev limit, the truck has the fuel and ignition maps to keep going a bit more, and the taco really gets spicy-- it really pulls like at 6400 rpms.

I have a 2024 manual and didn’t notice rev hang until I read the internet.

Most online complaints come from people that don’t even know how to drive a stick shift, let alone have one.

It’s a just a myth sissies use to justify the fact they can’t drive one

Agreed - I only buy manual vehicles and just drove a 4th gen. Was surprised it’s much nicer to shift than my 3rd gen was. Slightly shorter throws and smoother feeling. I didn’t notice rev hang being an issue at all. The Broncos manual trans is basically perfect and I don’t think I would miss it too much if I were to change to a 4th gen.

I noticed it a little if you rush the shifts on my drive home picking it up yesterday. My 2023 3rd gen had it as well. I like the feel of the 4th gen shifting better than the 3rd gen. As well as the power of the 4th gen.
