Not much fall color out in SW Wisconsin / SE Minnesota but that’s somewhat expected. Usually doesn’t peak til closer to Halloween. But there is only an imaginative leaf or two that is showing signs of starting the turn.

    IMG_7878.jpg

Crossed the Mississippi in Winona I think? HyVee grocery stores have big signs saying “new low prices!” X to doubt. Cost like $130 for what I’d pay like $60 for at home. Gahdamn Vikings…

    IMG_7870.jpg

Lots of construction along I90W slowed me down so didn’t hit all my intended stops today. But I did visit Hawkeye Point, the highest point in Iowa. Unsurprisingly it’s a flat spot you can drive right up to, and it’s in the middle of a corn field.

    IMG_0342.jpg

This is how close you can get so I parked there. A one-story viewing platform attached to a grain silo gives a little elevation:

Gratuitous Taco photo with corn and golden hour light.

    IMG_7897.jpg

Just down the road there is a big MN welcome sign. I didn’t get the Iowa one but it’s smaller and more boring.

    IMG_7902.jpg

Ran out of daylight. Camp tonight is at Palisades State Park in South Dakota bumblefuck nowhere. This is the last campsite I booked ahead because the drives between places are so long and pretty predictable. Everything from here is unknown. I’m actually in an RV electric site because that’s all they had and it sucks for all the loud ass dorks running around thinking they own the joint because RV people are special. But on the other hand it has a pretty swanky bathroom with showers like two sites over.

Was in four total US states today which is kinda neat and I think I pooped in three of them. Probably more exciting stuff tomorrow and an earlier start.

Yeah it was the Apostle Islands Grand Tour. Not certain I would do it again but it was most definitely worth doing once.

Isn't that where people walk out on the ice to see the ice formations in the winter?

Started the day at Palisades State Park since I was camped there. Some nice rock bluffs along the river but not worth it to go out of your way to see the place.

    IMG_7906.jpg

Quick stop at a small county park (don’t recall the name) and saw this falls that was once made into a mill/spillway and is now a falls again.

    IMG_7907.jpg

Spent more time at Devil’s Gulch where it rumored that Jesse James eluded the pigs after a MN bank heist when he & his horse jumped the ravine.

    IMG_7912.jpg

Pipestone National Monument. Lots of cultural information and displays but didn’t photo much out of respect. One large waterfall near part of the rocky quarries. Cool place.

    IMG_7921.jpg

I’ve been through Sioux Falls before but never actually visited the falls (wasn’t even aware of them in the past, what a crime). Finally saw them today. Wow!

    IMG_7924.jpg

It’s Saturday and I’m too lazy to cook or eat boring camp food. Carne asada at Incas in Sioux Falls then I’m off to camp.

One last shot for the night. Atmospheric haze is just bad enough I don’t want to pull out the bigger camera, but surprisingly first time playing with long exposure on the phone and it’s mind boggling how it works at all with such a tiny lens. PS site 42 at Lake Vermillion Rec Area, SD is pretty friggin money for watching stars.

PSA for anyone looking for an aftermarket head unit: stay far far far far far away from Pioneer. They are hot garbage nowadays. Guess who has two thumbs and is having stereo issues on an October road trip again on a completely different piece of hardware for the second year in a row?
