FWIW...

90% of even seasoned press users position the 2 piece bearing press clamp on incorrecrly. It may seem trivial but it can exert unven pressure to item being pressed and over time will bend the bolts. This was pointed out to me once apon a time by a well respected machinist.

Obsearve how the 2 piece press clamp (for lack of better wording) will have a bowing pressure applied to the unsupported bolts? Turning the 2 piece press clamp 1/4 turn will double the support and remove the bowing tension from the bolts

So OP might have been using old photos for today's lesson and only spoke of the correct procedure, not demonstrating them. i get it now.

 

The tool is called a bearing splitter not a 2 piece press clamp. I wonder if using on a press and resting on the level bed plates how any uneven pressure is exerted

Edit: Hey I am slow, just put 2 & 2 together. Not meaning to pick on anyone. I worked in a general repair/machine shop/ Shelby race restore shop as a newbie in the early 80's. Some of the smartest guys with stuff like this all day every day
