Hi. This is my first post after reading this forum for years. I’m on my fourth Tacoma and have had zero issues so far until I noticed this rust spot on my 2023 off road. The truck is 11 months old and has 14,000 miles on it. Not sure how long the rust spot has been there, I thought it was a bug for a while. Needless to say I’m beyond upset. This was supposed to be my “forever” truck. Last of the 3rd gen kind of thing. Now I’m not sure what to do. My first thought was to trade it in. But I really like it. I haven’t gone to Toyota yet. I noticed it right before the hurricane. (I’m in central Florida) Do you think a rock chip could have caused this or do you think there is a major issue going on? I’m sure the windshield has to be pulled to properly fix it but I’m just at a loss what to do. I’m sure Toyota will give me the run around and I hate going to the dealer. I attached some pics and used my finger for scale. It’s maybe 1/2 in max. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Andy

Geez dude, step off the ledge! It sucks, but it's not a fucking death sentence. This is easily fixable.

stonechip, and florida salty air. Toyota will probably do nothing. You could pay out of pocket, or turn into insurance as a comprehensive claim, due to a rock flying up and hitting the roof while driving, or from lawn mower while sitting. Get it fixed, or it will get worse. Ski

Just bad luck dude, but any vehicle this would happen to. Part of it being a DD. I used to be like this till I realized I lost too much sleep and stress over something that will eventually fall apart, scratch, chip, rack up miles, etc. Try to breathe, get it fixed and move on. I had a lawn guy shoot a rock at my 2011 and same thing started happening while I was deployed back in 2013. Sucks but can be fixed.

Thanks for talking me off the ledge. I do tend to over react to things. Just annoying I guess. I appreciate the replies.

I've been there. See if you can treat the rust with an inhibitor and hope to fix it without having to pull the windshield.

Make sure to get it taken care of more sooner, than later. If it migrates under the windshield frame, you will have all sorts of lifetime/ownership issues, visual rust being the least of them. Many windshield installers wont install or warranty a windshield replacement with a rusted frame. Ski

I just wonder if there is rust under the windshield seal also.

That is actually a nasty little rust spot with deep enough corrosion that the pitting will be quite noticeable unless taped off, sanded down to bare metal, the rust treated, and a primer filler used to build it back up, then sanded to blend and repainted. Once it gets under the windshield and adhesive area, it'll do serious damage that, while unseen now, will require far more work to repair and stop the rusting.

Part of the issue with rust and chips in the roof area is that the panel isn't usually dipped in a anticorrosive treatment and rust tends to be very aggressive due to that fact.

Update. I went to the dealership and got an estimate. Called Toyota and they opened a case. Supposed to hear back from them in a week or so. Dude at the body shop was pretty convinced that Toyota will kick it back and suggested I file an insurance claim.

Toyota paint is super thin and soft I’m surprised this doesn’t happen way more often. 4k is an ass rape rip off I paid $600 to repaint the roof on my old taco in SoCal a year or two ago you can get your entire truck painted for 7k
