Running boards or sliders with top plates will do far more than even large mud flaps.
Rocks still pelt under my running boards constantly with these big mud flaps. I’m sure they help but alone they aren’t enough.

I’m running 295/70/18 on my 3rd Gen tundra.

Wow gmtech, blessed are thou who fill this thread with such knowledge. Thank you.

Too bad this isn’t about mud flaps. Nor are those the only part of the equation. But maybe you can save us with more wisdom.

Agreed. I’ve driven tens of thousands of kilometers on gravel roads. You can have mud flaps dragging on the ground but rocks still go sideways, up, down, around, bounce and all over the place, are influenced by the vehicle’s aerodynamics, tire type. My trailhunter is throwing rocks in front of the truck that actually come back toward the hood/cab. Even different tire combinations throw rocks in different ways.

Sorry to see that damage! Again after relatively little gravel

    October 9 Dealer Update:

Went to see the service manager so he could document the chipping issues. He was shocked at how bad it was (it’s already worse since the initial photos I shared). He agrees Toyota has thin paint. He is disappointed that the truck is factory and chips that bad, that fast. He took a bunch of photos of the truck, components, factory stance etc, with some little stickies to identify all the chipping. He seems certain they will pay to repaint the truck and likely put new flares on, that he can get that pushed through easily, but he also thinks they (Toyota) need to do something to prevent it from getting worse. I told him about the sliders with top plate, PPF and flaps etc. He wants to use the fact that I’m spending that on parts to build a case to Toyota that it’s a problem. Will see what they say and update the thread.

    Thinnnnn paint for sure….
I tapped the edge of my front driver side door up against my toolbox, instantly chipped, the edge of the paint. I ended up extending my edge guards, the whole length of the door.

    Dang!

My truck is currently in getting wrapped for everything up front (almost, except roof which i will do later) up to the box. I’ll sort the box out after this gets sorted.

I have a 5' bed TRD Off Road, and my rear fenders are chipped up and I HAVEN'T driven it down a gravel rd!.

    Stock wheels/tires

I do have the TRD running boards and no mudflaps- as delivered

Its totally the design. And while I do like it, this is the only vehicle I've ever owned that I had to clean dead bugs off the rear fenders!

I think Toyota should install factory rock sliders with top plates on them all to remedy this! lol

Seriously though, I will be following this thread and If Toyota is going to do repaints, I'd jump all over it.

But even if they do, whats to stop them from getting chipped up again?

Do they make a thicker paint? Or maybe a super thick PPF?

Something besides giant mudflaps sticking out 6" from the fender and dragging the ground?

Maybe we all just need rocksliders, I wanted some anyway...

Jacob, have you taken it off road?
I’m guessing yes, sounds like it doesn’t have to be on gravel, even dirt road has an occasional rock… Or pebble

I’m sure just throwing dirt will do it

    Haven't taken it off road.

I promised myself it would stay on the pavement until I had the whole thing armored. Front/rear bumpers, sliders, skids, and big tires - I kept the winch from my last Tacoma

I made ALOT of mistakes with my last Tacoma that I dont want to repeat- Buying armor as I damaged things.

I'm still gathering parts and when I have them ALL I will be back in the woods. I'm planning a nice Xmas for myself!

But no. No gravel roads, No dirt. Only crappy Atlanta roads and lots of chips in that 2 microns thick paint.

I even scratched the door paint w my blue jeans squeezing into the truck because someone parked too close- I cant have nice things

Thats also part of why I got white, to minimize scratches. That and a nearly complete wrap should help.

Yeah I’m eager to see what Toyota does.

For those that are also experiencing this also, sitting back and watching what happens, spinning your wheels, is not the approach you wanna take….
You have to put in the work, regardless, what Chris’s outcome is here…
Longer you procrastinate, the likelihood of them telling you to pound sand increases..

Very true, the more folks that get a concern in to Toyota, the more likely they are to see there is an issue. Even Slater’s issue and mine will get flagged in a “paint” category.

Do you, or anyone else have a part number for the “newer” wider Tacoma Mudguard / mud flaps?

According to the guy on FB it’s this. Although I’ve heard that only Canada gets the newer version. Not sure how true that is though

Listening to all these folks having paint chip problems from rocks and Gravel roads..I’ll be picking up my Trailhunter on Tuesday and seriously looking at larger mudflap options. Does anybody know if the Ark brand mudflats will fit on the Trailhunter. Those look to be about largest ones out there that don’t look ugly.. thanks for any comments
