So mine came with just one key its not a push start just regular fob and always had a spare laying around in case i lost mine or I have had one break before.
I called the dealerships and they are roughly $400-$500 for a key with programming and an hour of labor plus the hour drive there and back. Pricy for something that is just going to sit in a drawer as a just in case not to mention the three hours of time.
Is there a less expensive option?
I mean if you are in the woods and lose it for some reason does it have to get towed to a dealership during hours just to get a key made. Always had two keys so never really thought about it.

Dealer wanted $538 for a smart key. I went to locksmith in my town and had same key made for $170. Shop around.

I believe the locksmith will read the immobilizer code off your current key then program the new key to be a clone of it.

My guy had some trouble with it but we finally realized all the doors had to be closed. He had an OBD tool plugged in that did the job.

A super cheap option might be to have a few metal (non-smart) keys made. Your SR probably has a key like my wife’s Corolla. The metal part will lock and unlock the door and start the ignition.

    IMG_0198.jpg

If you only have one key like in the picture just don’t lose or break it. FYI, my wife’s 11 year old Corolla came with 2 smart keys. Still have both keys and they both work great.

If you are a Costco member they partner with car keys Express which sometimes will operate in a Costco parking lot. They replace the chip key on my 2019 SR5. I think that was $75. A smart key would be around $200 or so. They offered two options for that one a smart key with the Toyota logo and one without the Toyota logo. One was more expensive than the other and I'll let you guess which one.

    Check out Tom's Keys online.

I'll probably do the $32 key only and $50 key by photo cut.

Cost me 15 dollars for a key, had it cut at home Depot and used my tech stream app to program it. Simple process

    it wont.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/283745251531 If you just want a backup key with chip heres the link

i wanted a flip key because i put my keys in my back pocket so this fit the bill. The panic button doesnt work but you can program the lock / unlock buttons. https://keyecu.com/upgraded-flip-re...6-2002-2005-visteon-model-no-41803-p2440.html

If you were in the Atlanta area i could hook up my techstream and program it for you but its never that easy.

I had a local locksmith cut a plain metal key that I hid in a magnetic box so if the keys ever got locked inside I could at least get in the door. A key like that would actually crank the engine but without the presence of the chip the engine would cut out before you had the vehicle in gear and moved It far. I did the same with my old 2006 Jeep too.

I guess wouldn’t hurt to have a key just to get in for that situation. Be nice to have one in case you lost or broke it though. I mean what happens if you lost the key in the woods or in the water on a weekend you are screwed having to have it towed to the nearest Toyota dealer and wait until they opened i would hope a locksmith would be able to do it. Id even know if any other dealer other than Toyota has the ability to do it. Had a honda key once where the metal shaft part snapped off from the plastic fob part

i would skip the "get into the truck key" I have one and regret not getting a full chipped key for the reason you list above. useless if you're in the middle of no where and you lose your keys for some reason or another

My 2021 only came with 1 key during the 'chip-shortage'.
About 6 months later I received 2 more... so now I got 3.

After seeing what's happening in the TV World ( smart-TV's ) I understand this so-called chip shortage.
Read somewhere that with the advent of these 'smart-TVs' and powerful chips embedded and AI, watch for TV Programs
to use AI to 'insert' products on your favorite show based on viewing and/or search habits, or for that matter probably general
conversation. Say you have a discussion regarding your favorite beer.... then suddenly in some show you are watching a fellow
opens the fridge and pulls out a drink, which happens to be 'your favorite beer', and meanwhile across the country I see the same
scene but the fellow pulls out a can of coke.... scary ain't it?

    Whoo hoo.
