I have a 2013 4.0 auto 162k miles and have an odd issue.
If I want to shift into neutral from drive it stays in drive even though my shifter is in the neutral spot and it moves forward like it is in drive.
If I shift into neutral from reverse it performs the action fine.
So if I am in drive and want to go to neutral I have to go in sequence drive-neutral- reverse- neutral.
I assume this is a shift linkage stretch issue but Interested on how to make the adjustment. Thanks

You should probably check the bushings on the shift cable for play due to wear

Is the shifter overall feeling tight? Like harder to move than normal? The range sensor on the side of the trans is notorious for getting rusty inside and doesn't want to move freely, that could stretch out the cable.

The linkage is known to rust and the bracket that holds the cable is known to break off the body work. Best to check under the truck while someone shifts it.

Wheels chalked and ebrake on of course.
