I'm so f&#king glad I got out of the business. I left in 2006 and it seems to only have gotten worse. I was able to help couple of buddies get out of it too by guiding them through the process of taking the civil service tests for jobs that considered auto mechanic experience a prerequisite.

I've noticed as I move around in my career field now, that I tend to find more and more niche roles to fill. That's helped keep things interesting for me at least. You think you know your work until you start moving into the dark corners of the related subjects haha. Been doing IT work for a little over a decade and even managed an couple IT teams. Now I have a supervisor again, but also kind of not really since we work in different locations and we have the same job title. I think they literally just needed to put me in an existing team for funding since starting another sub department would require a state audit. I'm a team of one doing IT work for a college, within a corrections facility. It's nice to work for something that you feel is going to help people, I've mostly worked IT in education for that reason, but this is the niche area of that segment and helps keep it interesting.

I read this and felt compelled to say something. There are great careers out there that most of us don't know about. I mean, how in the world at 18-21 years old are you supposed to say "That's what I want to do for the rest of my life?" It just isn't realistic unless you are a talented athlete/musician/artist/whatever! That's not the majority of us.
But you.....you are at a good age to change your career for something rewarding. You don't need a college education to make six figures (my mechanic nephew is doing this!) and several plumbers I know are 100% maxed out on jobs. On the other side, a college degree will open doors for you towards a new path. I might be the minority in saying this, but my HR and legal team always had my back first and I can say that with actual experience with leadership. It honestly depends on the company and organization you are with. If you see a company that puts money into their people (401k/education/certifications/leave/etc..) you know who they prioritize. I'm going to suggest something. Physically move to a different region! An old cuban immigrant told me when I first decided to transition from the military that I need to stay within the capital region of any country....that's where the jobs are. Use your education and experience as a door opener, but don't let it confine you to that lane.

Exactly, in its inception long ago HR was supposed to be there for everyone. But, absolute power...something..something..corrupts absolutely. In the 1990s I worked doing building maintainence..we worked for a company who did that work, not the landlord or tenants. There was an ongoing issue in one of the men's restrooms which suffice to say was disgusting beyond belief, my coworker one day wrote a nasty note and put it on the wall. He got called to the HR department of the tenant..his language was the issue, though the HR person did agree with him re the problem in general and wrote their own note which was posted in all the bathrooms and a copy emailed to each employee so at least something was done.

Totally agree re credit in general, my sister still never learned to control herself with that one and nearing 50 has not two nickels to her name.

That's the hope of course, or at least maybe you can have some fun telling people how they treated you. I left my retail job many years ago after being tired of similar nonsense at the store level, it didn't break my heart when the location went under in less than 6 months. Did my heart good to know some of the top brass were upset about my leaving at least.

My favorite and best job I ever had was working at a golf course. I had the best manager, the freedom of being outside and interacting with all kinds of people. When said manager left to a higher paying golf club, he made sure to take me with him.

I retired at the end of June after working in the shipping industry since 1975. I started working at a department store as a stock boy and loved what I was doing. I never left the industry even though I would change jobs from one employer to the next. Over the years I had seen it all and been there and done that. I watched the industry evolve and change and embraced the changes as they came. When I retired, I was a warehouse manager.
Here it is 4 months later I don't miss a thing. All those years this was my career, and I actually enjoyed what I was doing but, in the end, it was just a job that paid the bills. I was fortunate to make the money that I did and be lucky enough to actually enjoy what I did but in the end none of it really mattered. It was here and now and fulfilled a need. Companies want you to buy into their hype and be a part of their culture but in the end, we are all just a business transaction to them. Nothing more even though they will tell you otherwise. What I was doing all those years enables me to be comfortable now. I just find it odd that I don't miss it like I thought I would. It was time.

Congratulations, that's a long time to be at it. Enjoy your retirement! I get what you're saying about in the end none of it mattered. That's how I feel. We were "essential" when covid hit, but somehow I never felt to important. I realize that's the majority of jobs, and someone does need to do them. I think I've reached the classic burnt out stage. Trying to snap out of it.

Been reading this thread the last few days while off line.

That said.. Biscuit's for the morning guys, pizza for the afternoon guys, today.. I can honestly say I hate my job (I'll leave it at that), but have to pay the bills. This is also my fault for not getting out. So.... the, suck it up and drive on, approach is what I have been doing for years.

Great song. We all can relate to it in some way shape or form. don't worry about watching the vid, just listen to it.

    Yeah.
This popped up in my feed yesterday, thought it was appropriate for this thread.

Every man is the sum total of his reactions to experience. As your experiences differ and multiply, you become a different man, and hence your perspective changes. This goes on and on... So it would seem foolish, would it not, to adjust our lives to the demands of a goal we see from a different angle every day? How could we ever hope to accomplish anything... The answer, then, must not deal with goals at all... We do not strive to be firemen, we do not strive to be bankers, nor policemen, nor doctors. WE STRIVE TO BE OURSELVES. But don’t misunderstand me. I don’t mean that we can’t BE firemen, bankers, or doctors...but that we must make the goal conform to the individual, rather than make the individual conform to the goal... Beware of looking for goals: look for a way of life. Decide how you want to live and then see what you can do to make a living WITHIN that way of life. ~Hunter S. Thompson

    I'm the youngest in our workcenter...at 58.

The two gentlemen who are on this "work journey" with me are two peas in a pod when it comes to certain instances...

They have quirks that are compatible with each other but mine are definitely non-compliant when it comes to their interactions regarding instructions.

That's about as detailed as I will get...lol

I enjoy coming into work...don't get me wrong.

If this is all I have to deal with besides the stories in this thread...I consider myself lucky.

    Yes I do
    Some
    Job hater here. :anonymous:
I tried college for 2 weeks, it wasnt for me. So I went to work at a local factory (doesnt matter what they make, they're all the same), worked there 7 years and bailed out 1 year before it was moved to Mexico. Started at another factory, worked there 12 years and again jumped ship exactly 1 year before it was also moved to Mexico. Started at my current job (warehouse), been here 18.5 years and my plans are to retire in 5 years if they stick around long enough. I truly dont care if they do or dont, we both started 401k's at an early age so we'll be fine either way. Or we wont. Whatever. I just know that this will be my final job regardless.
The only thing I do like about my job is my shift; I'm off half the year. Moreso including holidays and vacation. And I hoard my vacation like grim death; after this Sunday I'll be off 39 days in a row. All paid. So there's that.
    But yes....I hate it.

Work is weird. My opinion is there seem to be 3 factors making work shitty. 1) company / company leadership philosophy 2) managers/supervisors 3) coworkers

i've worked at a few places, doing essentially the same thing and have changed various companies because of 1) company (like layoff or some kind of weird company policy/philosophy). 2) managers were difficult to work for (insert reasons such a poor leadership, bot having your back, not recognizing/rewarding your efforts, etc) and 3) competitive, sneaky, or low/not contributing coworkers.

But i've always found that most every new place/job always has problems. There's like a < 2% chance (my own made up number) that a vacant job that you are applying to or got hired into, is a perfect work environment of 1), 2), and 3) - that somehow just got opened up as a vacant job becuase that person retired or moved away.

That job was shitty for some reason (1, 2, or 3 or any combination of 1,2, or 3) or the person before you was a shit, did a shitty job and left a shitty mess, And because we need the job, we are happy to step right into that shit (initially anyways)

I was fortunate the guy I replaced moved up north.

You're right in factoring in the 3 atmospheres revolving around any workcenter.

Leadership in my current position definitely outweighs my previous job...both are Material Management field.

I'm the youngest buckaroo in this crew at 58 (Jun). lol!

Site Lead turned 65 in Aug and the next tenured guy turned 59 back in Jan.

Training is BIG with me...I'm very particular about how knowledge is transferred to my cabeza!

I enjoy coming into work...these guys have their quirks but so do I. lol

The biggest bonus for me...this job paid $20K more than my previous.

Makes sense, the shit is different shit when it's new at least. Though the first one is the one I find the most irksome, especially when it's hypocritical between the public image they want to spin and the way it really works.
