That doesn’t look terrible, not great, but you aren’t showing the parts that matter the most

Sadly it looks like someone painted over the rust, so I suspect you will find more…

Look at the inside of the frame, where the laminations meet, also up by the A/C drain, the rear leaf spring hanger area at the frame, etc

Actually, looking back at the pictures it looks like you have a rust hole all the way through the frame?? You better check this more thoroughly, start tapping around with a hammer

Why did you not check this before you bought it?

Everyone loves Tacoma's until they look underneath and see what they really bought. To make this worse Toyota has known for 20+ years their frames were crap but because people couldn't wait to buy their trucks why fix the problem. When I bought my new 17 model I assumed wrong when I thought the frame issues were addressed with the new third gens. At the time it was a toss of a coin weather I bought the Tacoma or a Honda Ridgeline. I love my truck and wont sell it but its parked in the winter during Ohios salt the roads and watch the cars rust season.
Id put your truck on a lift and take a hammer to the frame and see what you really got. In your pictures the one hole can be welded up and patched. Its probably gonna get worse the more you look. Good luck.

Looks like the frame was sprayed with CRC from Toyota's frame rust campaign. The CRC flakes off like plastidip after a few years, revealing a rusty frame underneath. The rust actually looks severe but not fatal. Your biggest hurdle is scraping off the CRC as it tends to gum up wire wheels. Dry ice blasting is quick and effective, but very expensive.

Did you remove the passenger side rear shock or did you buy the truck with the shock missing?

There’s a hole in the frame that I circled in red. You better check the entire thing over with a fine tooth comb especially on the inside of the boxed sections near the catalytic converters.

It's pretty interesting how bad the frame looks in contrast to the pristine rockers and pinch welds on the cab.
