I get all this. In the same boat. Probably will retire sooner than later. Will effect my ret draw size later. Getting talked about taking other management jobs but I’m not interested. Will go back to work until I can stop for good. Now it’s coming down more to my health than anything. There’s a very small chance I stick it out in this current job an ex 2-3 years so I can exit the work force even sooner but I doubt it.

I'm not trying to brag. I busted my ass for 33 years with the Sheriff's Office and 32 years total active duty and reserve time in the military. I’m happy to say I retired from the SO with 99% of my pay. I’m not sure what I will end up with from the reserves as the pay actually computes until I start to draw it at 60. I retired out as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 so it should be a decent allowance but the health benefits are what is really nice. The insurance from the SO was stupid expensive but really good coverage. I was glad I was able to switch over to TriCare, the military health insurance, before my pay started. It is about half of what the SO insurance was. When I hit 60 next year it drops to a really affordable rate, then it is a free Medicare supplement at 65.

Responsibility wise, it would have been nice to stay a worker at both jobs but I enjoyed the challenges that came with the higher ranks. The headaches increased significantly as I moved up the ladder but now that I’m on the backside the higher pay rates are really nice.

We lived pretty lean for a long time but were able to pay off the house years ago and I bought and paid off the Tacoma before I retired. My wife is perfectly happy with her older Lexus but I do have enough in a savings account to buy her a new one when she’s ready.

 

Zoom, zoom! I bet it’s fun making the run through the mountains to your cabin.
