You're better off to start your own thread as this one is over a year since last active

Seems doubtful a cam was replaced. Maybe look at your papers to verify before posting?

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Mine has been doing that for 14 years. It’s its way of telling me it loves me.

This is the classic vvti cam gear cold start rattle. Dealer won't do anything about it unless it happens on every single start.

If the truck runs fine and the sound happens on and off, you're totally fine. Even on brand new engines confirmed to have nothing wrong with them this noise sometimes happens on cold start while hydraulic oil pressure builds and activates the vvti cam gear assemblies

    Your dealership sounds clueless.
Diagnosing this problem just involves opening the timing cover. Why did they change the camshaft lol what a waste of time

Sorry to revive this thread since many folks hate that sort of thing, but my truck just recently started doing this after 4 trouble free years of ownership.

I use 0W20 oil, I use OEM filters. The video posted basically sums it all up .. I get that annoying rattle randomly on cold starts... Usually when the truck sits for more than 24 hours and when it's chilly outside.

Someone says they chased the demon and replaced several things, others say that's just a "Tacoma noise" and not to worry... I hate the noise and it didn't happen for almost 5 years so I would like to find out how to track it down and fix it..

    Anyone have any suggestions????

I too have a 2019 Tacoma making the exact noise posted. My taco is the base model, 4 cyl, 2.7L. Recently replaced serpentine belt, pulley and tensioner....still making that wretched rattle on cold start UPS. I use full synthetic with an OEM oil filter. I would love to get to the bottom of this. Thoughts/suggestions?

So here's where I'm at .. I initially checked the oil level and it was about 1/4 quart low .. I added a bit and just drove it ... The additional oil didn't make a difference. It somehow has stayed warm here until recently.....

I just changed my oil/filter last week (I'm on a 5k interval). I use 0w20 synthetic and always an OEM oil filter. 5.5 quarts to fill..... I have not heard this noise since I did an oil change and it has been below 40 in the AM...

My thought is that some how my last OEM filter was a dud??? Maybe the anti drain back valve was faulty around 4000 miles? Who knows.??

I'm in the process of elimination at this point. I'm monitoring things and keeping an eye on my oil level and listening in the AM.

I generally jump in turn the key and blast to work....lately I've been taking it easy.. I've been keeping an ear out for a couple minutes. I now wait until the SAIS is done doing it's thing to put it in gear and drive.

Same here, my 2020 2.7L Tacoma with 110k miles suddenly made a very loud noise after 3 years of no problem ownership, check Tacoma world and compared the sound, and exactly the same, used 0w-20 mobile 1 with 3-5 k interval. Looks like what happened to your taco is the same with my taco, is there any update?

Not sure there's any quick fix.

    Some ppl replace the motor
    Others ignore the sound altogether.

Right now I'm just playing a waiting game and hoping I had a bum filter (although I order 10 at a time and if one is bad they are probably all bad). However it's been 6 days and no cold start rattle so far after a fresh oil and filter change

I doubt a bad filter would restrict the flow to cause that for what its worth i never run 0-20 too thin in my opinion i dont care what "toyota recommends" if you look years past same engine in the 2nd gen and 0-20 was not what they suggested its all for epa and gas mileage. I would try an engine cleaner to see if it helps. I have had success in years past with a stuck lifters with adding a little trans fluid to the oil about 500 miles before your next change, its a great detergent.

This job is above my pay grade, but my gut says it could be a VVT issue. I have an extended warranty that's still intact. I'm going to take it to the dealer tomorrow and will report back.

Good luck... I've read plenty of people getting nowhere with the dealership. Once you drive it there you have to let it sit overnight and then have someone who knows what their listening for be there for the 10 or less seconds it happens in cold start.

Yeah, roll of the dice for sure...might be a waste. I plan to show them the OP's video too. Not much to lose other than time, which I fortunately have tomorrow. Will post if anything is discovered

There's plenty of things it could be...it seems that this is a somewhat common issue on Toyota vehicles with vvti. I was coming up for an oil change so I decided to do nothing until until I got fresh oil in it and a new filter. I've read several people having the issue due to a crappy filter, something about the anit-drain back valve.

I'm not confident this will last, but Im Sure hoping it will. My concern is that my truck has been just fine for 75k and now this intermittent issue. I don't want to prematurely grenade my motor. The resolution is probably in the vvti timing area, but I don't want to crack open the upper half of the motor for no reason and randomly replace parts and hope it fixes the intermittent noise.

I would expect vvti gear or chain tensioner i need someone to figure it out so by the time mine starts clankin i will know what to go with lol.

Yeah i am with you a little frustrating especially since lets face it thats why we bought the 2 tr in the first place to not really have issues. I expect same vvti gear or the tensioner im only at 33k hopefully have some miles to go before its making noise.

Keep us posted. Obviously it's something I've read way too much about and so far there's no clear cut fix I can find to the issue.

Well .. the oil change and new filter lasted a week. Today (after sitting for exactly 24 hours)... It wasn't even cold out, and I heard the rattle. Step 1 is a fail .

Step 2 is gonna be to run some LiquiMoly/Seafoam through the crank case drive it for 500 miles and change the oil. I'll probably do this in 3000 miles. Obviously I'll be paying attention to frequency and temperature.

FWIW, my air filter box wasn't properly closed/sealed. There's a plastic lip that the lid is supposed to sit under near the back of the box. I cleaned/lubed the K&N filter and reseated. The noise has not came back (yet).
