May I suggest a shooting sport?
I participate in a 2 gun 22LR steel plate shooting competition and it is tons of fun
Everything is timed but you are really competing against yourself most of all
You can't really compare one month event to the next because the stages are random
    You are standing still
The main focus is proper firearm safety/handling
There are kids there and there are grandma/grandpa's there and everything in between
Everyone is super nice, even the hyper competitive ones..
I am friends with a hyper competitive one + her husband - she spends gobs of $$ on her guns/optics and practices like once a week; good for her I say.
Glad she is enjoying her retirement. Her husband is a trip because he is not at all serious about it, he is just there to be social and enjoy the company so we joke around a lot.
In the end the same group of people always come out on 'top' but most everyone doesn't seem to care and just wants to have an enjoyable time with other responsible human beings.
Any safety violation can get you removed/banned - usually you will get a warning [if it isn't major] but a 2nd warning = GTFO; haven't seen anybody removed yet which is a testament to the good group of folk who actually adhere to firearms safety rules.

College kids are gonna piss people off, it's what they do
We were all young and stupid once

There are usually two ways to win a sporting event - athleticism + skill
When I was young, I relied more on the athleticism - now I find skill more useful [cause old, athleticism waning] - the strategy changes with age

There are always those who will take the cheap shot if it is there, sometimes it is just opportunity, sometimes the person is truly a jerk
I might take a cheap shot if I thought it would deliver the W

    short story time:
in PE in HS we had 3 volleyball courts set up indoors
i was playing on court #1
bryan wyatt was playing on court #2
bryan wyatt was a fridge of a dude, played linebacker
he spiked the ball, into my face [cause all force, no control] and it made me see stars!!
only time that has ever happened to me!

I really need to get all of my scuba gear serviced and up to date, and then get the wife into it. I kind of miss it.

You should give it a go - low barrier to entry unlike SCUBA. . .

I used to dive occasionally when I lived in SFLA - never got certified tho
Did a few night dives too, creepy AF!!
It was fun, but it is a lot of shit - gear, boat, things going wrong with boat, etc. . .
Plus most of the dive sites are so degraded these days, it just makes me sad so I'd rather not

    22LR = cheap ammo
show up, pew pew, go home, clean guns
and actually i've been using the match director's guns so i just show up with a pile of 22LR ammo and have fun for 4hr
